Tday marks the last day f the Scial Media Detx, Brentn High’s fundraising campaign fr new sprts equipment. At the start f the detx, ver 100 students had been persuaded t stp using scial media, in ANY frm, fr seven days. This meant n messaging friends, n psting phts, n blgging – nthing. They had been prmised mney by family and friends fr each day spent withut using scial media. They were excited. They were nervus. But culd they d it?
With the detx nw finished, they’ve switched n their devices and they’re back nline. I bet yu’re as eager as I am t find ut just hw many have been mtivated enugh t last the full seven days! And what, if anything, has been learnt frm the experience?
I lasted tw days. The detx was mre difficult t tlerate than I had expected. I felt like I had lst an arm! Nt eating fr tw days wuld have been easier! But n reflectin, I can see hw much f my time had been ccupied with checking my phne. I’m nw trying t spend less time nline and mre time picking up my hbbies.
I lasted fur days. On Mnday, my classmate and I spke abut what we did at the weekend – it felt really strange nt t already knw what he had dne. We wuld usually have psted pictures and updated ur prfiles. Ding the detx meant we had t talk and explain what we were ding and thinking! It made me realise the value f real cntact that I had frgtten.
I managed the whle week! At first, I really felt I was missing ut. Then, instead f messaging my friend, I went rund t her huse. Withut ur phnes, we had a prper cnversatin fr ver tw hurs, withut being distracted by messages frm ther peple. It felt s gd! Then I decided t visit a different friend every day. By the fifth day, I wndered – was I really missing ut by nt cnstantly checking my phne t see what everyne else was up t?
I did all seven days, t! T be hnest, I didn’t find the detx t difficult, but I did give my phne t my dad t avid giving in! My brther thught I shuld make full use f the time withut my phne, s he tk me t check ut ur lcal sprts centre. An hur’s sprt each day left me tired ut and wanting t g t bed early. The detx made me healthier!
I’m embarrassed t say that I threw in the twel n the first day! I knew there was a party happening that evening, but withut access t scial media I culdn’t remember where it was! In the end, I turned n my phne t check, but culdn’t resist having a quick lk at my scial media accunts. What’s wrse, I then spent s much time catching up n news, I almst missed the party!
