Wrk in pairs. Cmplete the quiz and find ut hw much yu knw abut Mars. Try t guess if yu are nt sure f the answers.
1 Mars is the ______ smallest planet in the slar system. a secnd b third c furth 2 The surface f Mars is cvered in ______. a rcks b water c grass
    3 The average recrded temperature n Mars is ______. a 40℃ b 2 ℃ c −63 ℃ 4 One day n Mars is abut ______ lng. a 18 hurs b 24 hurs c 37 hurs
Read the passage and find ut why humans might live n Mars.
In the 1960s and 1970s, the greatest fear was that the human race, and pssibly all advanced life frms n the planet, culd be wiped ut by nuclear missiles, just at the push f a buttn. Tday, hwever, envirnmental prblems have taken ver as the greatest risk t life n Earth. Scientists are thinking f ways t lwer this risk, such as replacing cal and il with frms f renewable energy. But they are als preparing fr the wrst: what can we d if the terrifying scenes in films such as The Day After Tmrrw happen in real life? What is ur Plan B fr Earth?
One ptin is t explre ther planets t see if we culd live n them. The mst likely chice is Mars, which is relatively clse t Earth and has an envirnment less hstile than that f ther planets. Mars has fascinated peple since ancient times, and tday ur interest in Martian explratin is greater than ever befre. Films such as The Martian enjy wrldwide ppularity. Mre gvernments and rganisatins are making effrts t educate the public n the Red Planet, fr example, the Mars Desert Research Statin in the Utah desert f the US and the Mars Village in Nrth-west China’s Qinghai Prvince.
Since the 1960s, we have been sending unmanned spacecraft t Mars. Our prbes have rbited the planet, sending back valuable data and stunning images. Our rbts have explred the Martian surface, testing the sil and searching fr resurces, water and signs f life. Encuraged by discveries ver the years, space agencies f varius cuntries are planning manned missins t Mars that culd take place within the next 25 years.
There is n dubt that humankind is drawn twards Mars, with dreams f making it ur secnd hme. Hwever, sending peple there will require all the skill, curage and intelligence f the human race. While the Mn can be reached within days, it wuld take mnths t reach Mars, travelling thrugh dangerus slar radiatin. And even if the first settlers d reach Mars safely, they may nt be able t return t Earth – ever. Staying alive will be a daily challenge, but as prved by the Bisphere 2 experiment, nt impssible.
As early as the 1980s, scientists were building Bisphere 2 in the Arizna desert. It cnsisted f a clsed space in which peple, animals and plants culd live tgether. The “clsed” cncept meant that the space was designed t functin with its wn xygen, fd and water, needing nthing frm the utside wrld. Althugh the tw-year experiment was nt a success, it did prvide us with a better understanding f hw humans might be able t live n anther planet. Mre recently, scientists have succeeded in grwing a variety f plants in an envirnment similar t that n Mars. That definitely is a big step frward.
Fr nw, human settlement f Mars is still decades away. In the meantime, scientific research shws that the planet Earth is getting warmer. This change is being caused by human activity and is having a terrible effect n the bisphere. Until we are finally able t live n anther planet, we need t take much better care f ur wn. Right nw, it’s the nly ne we have!
Chse the magazine in which yu wuld mst likely find the passage and give yur reasns.
1 The Traveller 2 All Abut Space 3 Envirnmental Cncerns 4 Bilgy fr Fun
Chse the statements that can be inferred frm the passage.
1 Wuld yu like t be ne f the first peple t live n Mars? Why r why nt?
Yes, fr it will be exciting t have the experience that ther peple d nt have. N, fr it will be quite lnely fr me t live n the Mars alne. Besides, I will face sme unexpected trubles.
    2 Which is better, t live n Mars r t slve Earth’s prblems? Why?
Different peple have different ideas. Pssible answers:1)T live n Mars is better, because it is ttally a new place.2)T slve Earth’s prblems is better, because n ther planet is mre apprpriate fr humans t live in.
3 Can yu think f a “Plan C” t save peple frm the prblems n Earth? Share it with the class. 4 What theme d the tw reading passages in this unit have in cmmn? On what aspects des each passage fcus?
Wrk in pairs. Cnduct an interview abut living n Mars.
1 Decide yur rles. 2 Lk at the sample questins abut living n Mars and add any mre yu can think f. Then write dwn sme answers.
3 Act ut the interview with yur partner.
Nw think abut hw well yu perfrmed in the interview. Vte in class fr the best interview.
It’s been a week since the ther astrnauts left Mars and went back t Earth, accidentally leaving me here alne. I was caught in a dust strm and lst cntact with them.
After resuming cmmunicatin with the base five days later, I was infrmed that it will be eight mnths befre a rescue missin arrives frm Earth. Frtunately, I have shelter, because the landing capsule prtects me frm the deadly radiatin utside. The capsule is pwered by a small nuclear plant. It might have just enugh electricity fr eight mnths, if nthing ges wrng. What’s mre, my spacesuit keeps me safe frm expsure t the Martian surface fr up t several hurs at a time. Water and xygen were my biggest wrries at first, but I’ve discvered an undergrund ice depsit nearby. I can reach the ice with ur survey tls. That’s lucky, because I can drink the water frm the ice and als use it t prduce xygen when I run lw.
Nw I am wrried abut fd. There is nly enugh fr ne persn fr fur mnths – fur mnths shrt f what I need. Part f ur missin was t experiment with grwing plants in the Martian sil, s I have seeds f varius kinds. I must wrk ut hw t farm n Mars. If I can slve that challenge, and if the electricity supply hlds, I can survive until I am rescued. There’s still hpe!
    Nw write yur stry.
Read the passage and answer the questins.
The green lizards that lived in the lwer branches and trunks f Flrida’s trees fund themselves in truble when a tugher species, the brwn lizards, was intrduced frm Cuba. Withut enugh fd t g arund, and under pressure frm the new arrivals, the green lizards mved higher up the trees, where it is harder t keep a grip n the smther branches. The green lizards adapted quickly ver a relatively shrt time f 15 years, and nw they have bigger pads n their tes and stickier scales t help them stay high in the trees – and well away frm their trublesme neighburs!
1 What happened t the green lizards? What did they d t cpe with it? 2 What is the main message f the passage?
Wrk in grups. Find evidence t back up the main message and make ntes. D further research if necessary.
Talk abut the main message in mre detail and make ntes.
Prepare a shrt presentatin. Cnsider the fllwing: 1 the structure f yur presentatin 2 useful wrds, expressins and structures
