Develping ideas
1 Read the shrt intrductin t Benjamin Franklin and share any ther infrmatin yu knw abut him.
Benjamin Franklin (1706-1790) was ne f the Funding Fathers f the United States and helped draft the Declaratin f Independence and the US Cnstitutin. Apart frm being a successful statesman, he was als well knwn as a leading American authr printer and publisher, successful diplmat, creative scientist and inventr.
2 Read the passage and find ut what Franklin’s experiment aimed t prve.
An essay title ften cntains an explicit r implicit questin which yur essay shuld fcus n answering. Fr example, the title“Franklin’s Experiment: Hw Much is True?” makes it clear what questin is being answered within the essay.
Learning t learn
FRANKLIN’SEXPERIMENT:Hw Much ls True?
Benjamin Franklin’s famus experiment with lightning has intrduced generatins f children t science. Hwever, new research suggests that the stry may be fictin instead f fact.
The well-knwn stry is that the American Funding Father and scientist flew a kite during a strm in 1752. At that time, there was much interest in electricity. Peple wanted t knw if lightning was really prduced by electricity r smething else. Franklin was ne f them. He raised the kite with a piece f string tied t it. A metal key was attached t the string. A flash f lightning hit the kite, and electricity was cnducted thrugh the string t the key. Franklin then tuched the key with his finger and gt an electric shck. This, he said, prved that lightning was a frm f electricity.
Fr many years, schls have taught the stry f Franklin’s lightning experiment. Mre than ne generatin f schlchildren has been amazed by his bravery and his scientific apprach t lking fr the truth. Franklin, alng with many ther scientists, has inspired us and taught us that scientific experiments are imprtant in rder t establish the truth and t cntribute twards later scientific discveries and inventins.
Hwever, neither the stry nr the details f the experiment are entirely true. Althugh it has been prved that Franklin’s experiment tk place, mre than ne scientist has questined what really happened. The detail abut the string and the key is true. But scientists all agree that if Franklin had actually tuched the key, he wuld certainly have died frm the electric shck.
Scientists ften questin accepted ideas because they want t establish the facts. Sme have even questined the stry abut the apple that fell n Newtn’s head and led him t cme up with his thery f gravity. In fact, mre than ne accunt suggests that while Newtn was certainly inspired by a falling apple, there is n prf that it hit him n the head.
Admittedly, fictin is ften mre interesting than the truth. Peple have been mre inspired by Franklin’s spirit f scientific explratin than by the facts themselves. But in science, facts shuld be prved by experiments and research, and we shuld nt always believe everything we read r hear - even if it is a great stry.
3 Number the statements t shw hw peple’s attitudes twards Franklin’s experiment have changed.
Franklin’s spirit f scientific explratin is still cnsidered an inspiratin.Peple are amazed at and inspired by Franklin’s experiment.Scientists questin what really happened in Franklin’s experiment.
Think & share
1 D yu think it matters that Franklin’s experiment might nt be true? Why?eg N. Because what really matters lies in his bravery t d the experiment. 2 What is yur pinin abut the statement “... we shuld nt always believe everything we read r hear - even if it is a great stry” ?eg Smetimes a really great stry may nt be true, and we need t have critical thinking.
3 What qualities d yu think a great scientist shuld have?eg I think a great scientist shuld be patient, serius, brave, careful, creative and imaginative…4 In what ways d scientists cntribute t sciety?Firstly, scientific discveries prmte the develpment f ur sciety. Secndly, the cntributins f scientists in medicine extend ur life span. Thirdly, scientists have invented a lt f surprising tls that fundamentally imprve ur living standards.
4 Wrk in grups. Explain yur understanding f the saying “Seeing is believing”, and then give a talk abut it. Yu may use infrmatin in the passage as examples.
1 Make ntes abut yur understanding f the saying and list supprting details.
2 Organise yur talk fllwing the steps belw.Start yur talk by explaining hw yu understand this saying.Explain why yu think this way. Use the ntes yu have made t supprt yur ideas.End yur talk by summarising yur pints.3 Give yur talk t the class.
Writing an experiment reprt
5 Read the instructins fr the experiment and answer the questins.
1 What d yu think the results f this experiment will be?2 What can yu learn frm this experiment?
6 Cmplete the bxes with the infrmatin in Activity 5. D further research if necessary.
Nw write a reprt f the experiment.
7 Share yur reprt with the class.
Presenting ideas
1 Wrk in grups. Lk at the pictures and discuss hw these bjects have changed ver the years.
2 Chse ne f the bjects in Activity 1 r an bject that yu use every day. Predict hw it will further change ver the next 50 years. Make ntes abut yur ideas.
3 Present yur ideas t the class. Use the ntes in Activity 2 and the expressins in the bx t help yu.
