Interviewer: Gd evening, and welcme t Between the Pages. This evening, I’ll be talking t Dr Richard Fairhurst, whse new bk The New Age f Inventin has just been published. Welcme, Richard!
Richard: Thank yu. It’s a pleasure t be here.
Interviewer: I guess yu have been asked abut the title f yur bk befre. It suggests that the present day is a new age fr inventins, but many peple might think that the great age f inventin is ver.
Richard: Well, that’s an interesting pint. There have been glden ages f inventin thrughut histry. Think f the fur great inventins in Ancient China: gunpwder, papermaking, printing and the cmpass. These things changed the wrld frever. Then there were the great Western inventins: the steam engine, the telephne and the radi. And nw, we find urselves in the great new age f technlgy.
Interviewer: S are mst f the new great inventins tech-based?
Richard: A lt, yes. Fr example, advances in virtual reality and wearable tech, as well as the flexible battery, mean we shuld sn be seeing further develpments. In additin, imprtant advances have been made in medicine and envirnmental science thanks t increasing cmputer pwer.
Interviewer：Can yu give us sme examples?
Richard: Sure. New inventins like 3D printers have been used t make replacement hearts and bne parts. In terms f the envirnment, it is nw pssible t create an intelligent walking huse. It is capable f using GPS technlgy t travel t different places, with cmputing technlgy cntrlling its“legs”. What’s mre, huge advances in slar technlgy mean it can be ec-friendly, t.
Interviewer: Impressive stuff! I’ve als been tld that yu're an inventr yurself. Is that crrect?
Richard: Yes, I am, but I’m nly ne member f a big team - mst inventrs nw wrk as part f big internatinal teams.
Interviewer: I see. S what is it that inspires us t invent things?
Richard: Mst inventins start with recgnising a prblem that needs a slutin. This was n dubt the reasn behind the inventin f the wheel in ancient times, which much later develped int the car. Nw, reduced energy supplies and envirnmental pllutin have led t mre advances in the technlgy f new energy vehicles. But what remains imprtant is that we have an incredible desire t think and create, and that's the real spirit f inventin.
Interviewer: One last questin. This is the ne everyne really wants t knw: will anybdy ever invent a time machine?
Richard: I think yu’ve been watching t many mvies! Nthing like this has been invented yet and I’d say. we’re a lng way frm an inventin like that at the mment! But, as they say, “Never say never!”
