Lndn native, Bdhana first became interested in chess t beat back bredm. Just five years ld at the time, she quickly surpassed (超越) her father’s chess playing ability and began playing, and winning, in nline chess games. Three years later, Bdhana made histry as the tp female chess player in Eurpe after she defeated grandmasters many times her age at the Eurpean Rapid & Blitz Chess Champinship in December 2023.
Sivanandan Velayutham, Bdhana’s father, said that his daughter first became fascinated with chess at the age f five, when he brught hme a secnd-hand chess set. Bdhana happened t see the knight (武士) lying arund and it caught her interest. “I want the hrse,” she tld her father.
Bdhana’s father was happy t help and he taught her the chess basics that he’d learned in India. But it didn’t take lng fr his preschl daughter t beat him. “At the start, I might have wn ne r tw games, but she sn knew the rules better than me and the tables quickly turned,” Velayutham said.
Frm the beginning, Bdhana strengthened what her father was teaching her with games and methds that she learned frm YuTube vides. But when it became clear that she had a lasting interest and an unusual talent, her father enrlled in a lcal chess club fr her, where she sn fell int the habit f practicing daily fr an hur r mre.
Last year, at ne f Bdhana’s first ever turnament experiences, which was hsted by the English Chess Federatin, she defeated a number f grandmasters.
