I am an eclgist frm Zimbabwe, but I’ve been based at the Natinal University f Lesth in Maseru fr mre than 13 years. Lesth is a muntainus inland kingdm in suthern Africa. Its high-altitude(高海拔的) wetlands supprt the Lesth Highlands Water Prject, which delivers water t the Vaal River System in Suth Africa, generating bth incme and electricity fr Lesth.
I study the eclgical balance that keeps thse areas functining prperly: The wetlands trap water when it rains and release it gradually during dry perids. An imprtant part f this is t map the plants, animals and general envirnmental cnditins, and hw they change ver time.
One f ur team prjects mnitrs the sundscapes f thse areas t identify the animals that live there. We put sensitive recrding equipment in the field fr weeks at a time. This is f great help because, althugh that site is just 180 kilmeters frm my university in the capital f Lesth, it can take up t fur hurs t drive there.
The data we gather are huge, and althugh we d listen t the recrdings, we mainly use sftware t help us analyze the data. We want t cmpare ur recrdings between seasns, between dawn and dusk (晨昏) and between day and night, t understand the rhythms f the ecsystem. We als cmpare ur recrdings frm different wetland types. High-altitude areas are easier t be affected by climate change and, in my view, it is the greatest threat thse prtected wetlands face.
Listening t the recrdings makes me happy because I enjy hearing a variety f sunds, especially the singing f different birds. In a small cuntry like Lesth, there are s many knwledge gaps t fill-it’s ne f the benefits f being a researcher there. I hpe that in the future sme f yu in this classrm will cntribute t this as well.

M: Once again we’re hlding ur ppular phtgraphy cmpetitin fr children. It’s pen t all children between 8 and 12 wh have an interest in phtgraphy. We’re nt lking fr special technical skills - just the imaginatin t take a gd picture. Last year, the tpic fr ur cmpetitin was wildlife and we received many excellent phts. This year, we’d like yur phts t be n the subject f the sea. This is the nly requirement. It desn’t matter whether yur pht is in clr r black and white. The size f the phts was limited t 17 cm lng and 12 cm wide last year, but there’s n limit n that this year. A team f prfessinal phtgraphers will judge the phts and they’ll chse the fur that they think shw the mst prmise. The winner will receive a camera, while the secnd prize will be free phtgraphy lessns.
