W: Paul, let's talk abut yur wrk experience in Suth America. What tk yu there? Was it t imprve yur Spanish?
M: Well, I just wanted t find ut mre abut the way peple lived there. My spken Spanish was already pretty gd. In fact, I ended up teaching English there.
W: I see. Hw did yu d that?
M: I fund an agency that runs vluntary prjects. Cnstructin was an ptin. Then there was turism, which I actually chse t d, and then there was wrk with lcal farmers, r we say agriculture.
W: I think it must be a gd chance t experience a different life.
M: Yes, but it was hard t be accepted at first. Hwever, when peple became mre cmfrtable with me, we really cnnected with each ther in a meaningful way.
W: That's really gd. What d yu think f the fd there? M: Simple, but there was plenty t eat.
W: Quite gd. Well, I'll lk frward t hearing mre.

W: Welcme t ur prgram. Tday we have invited Fread Wcsn, an expert n envirnment, t talk t us. M: Hell, everybdy.
W: There are s many envirnment prblems in the wrld tday. Mr. Wcsn, d yu think we can really slve them all?
M: I hpe that wrld leaders can get tgether and agree n a plan fr actin.
W: We need t slve the prblem f air pllutin. There's lts f clean, mdern technlgy.
M: But cmpanies say it's expensive. Develping cuntries pay mre attentin t industrial develpment than t envirnment prtectin.
W: Everyne is lking at the prblem in the shrt term, rather than the lng term.
M: It's the same with the damage f the rainfrests. Cuntries and cmpanies just want the wd. W: They're nt thinking abut the lng-term damage t the frests.
M: N. In ther parts f the wrld, especially in Africa, climate change and ver-farming are causing farmland t turn int desert.
W: Damaging the envirnment actually leads t cnflict between peple.
M: Yes.

Mst American cllege students need t be efficient readers. This is necessary because full-time students prbably have t read several hundred pages every week. They dn't have time t read a chapter three r fur times. They need t btain as much infrmatin as pssible frm the first r secnd reading.
An extrardinarily imprtant study skill is knwing hw t mark a bk. Students mark the main ideas and imprtant details with a pen r pencil, yellw r blue r range. Sme students mark new vcabulary in a different clr. Mst students write questins r shrt ntes in the margins. Marking a bk is a useful skill, but it's imprtant t d it right. First, read a chapter with ne pen in yur hand and thers next t yu n the desk. Secnd, read a whle paragraph befre yu mark anything. Dn't mark t much. Usually yu will mark abut 10% f a passage. Third, decide n yur wn system fr marking. Fr example, maybe yu will mark main ideas in yellw, imprtant details in blue and new wrds in range. Maybe yu will put questin marks in the margin when yu dn't understand smething. And befre an exam, instead, yu just need t review yur marks and yu can save a lt f time.
