Mst times, I culd understand what Lily meant until last week I read a message written frm Lily t me. I fund ut the British really like the letter “u” and have kept it in many wrds. Hwever, we Americans have drpped it. Smewhere in ur language histry, we decided that “neighbr”, “clr” and “favrite” were just fine withut “u” next t the “”.
Here is ne mre example. While I was in Lndn fr the first time last year, I lst my watch. When I asked my British friend what time it was, he said alud as “a quarter t seven”, which made me speechless and lst in thught. After a few secnds, I finally realized it was “six frty-five”. Equally, 6:15 fr us is translated as “six fifteen”, while the British wuld say “a quarter past six”. Althugh the differences between American and British English smetimes make me cnfused(困惑的), it’s really fun t explre mre f them frm my wn experience.
