What she prpsed didn’t seem as exciting as the riginal prject I had applied t, but I was ging t give it my all.

That prject, which I culd cmplete frm my sfa instead f in the burning heat f the desert, nt nly survived the lckdwn but wrked where traditinal methds didn’t. In the end, I had a new scientific interest t pursue.
When I applied t graduate schl, I fund three prgrammes prmising t allw me t fllw my desired research directin. And I applied with the same anxius excitement as befre. When I was rejected frm ne that had seemed like a perfect fit, it was undubtedly difficult. But this time I had the perspective (视角) t keep it frm sending me int panic. It helped that in the end I was accepted int ne f the ther prgrammes I was als excited abut.
Rather than setting plans in stne, I’ve learned that smetimes I need t take the pprtunities that are ffered, even if they dn’t sund perfect at the time, and make the mst f them.

Antarctica has nt always been a land f ice and snw. Earth’s suthernmst cntinent nce was hme t rivers and frests full f life. Researchers are using satellites t lk deep under the ice in Antarctica, finding a large ancient landscape buried under the cntinent’s ice sheet. The landscape is lcated in East Antarctica’s Wilkes Land area brdering the Indian Ocean, cvering an area abut the size f Belgium. The researchers said the landscape is estimated t have been buried beneath the ice shelf fr between 14 millin t 34 millin years, when Antarctica entered its deep freeze.
“The landscape is like a snapsht f the past,” said Stewart Jamiesn, a prfessr f glacilgy at Durham University in England and c-leader f the study published in the jurnal Nature Cmmunicatins, “It is difficult t knw what this lst wrld might have lked like befre the ice came alng, but it was certainly warmer back then. Ancient palm tree pllen has been discvered frm Antarctica, nt far frm ur study site.”
Sme earlier studies have uncvered ancient landscapes beneath Antarctica’s ice including muntains. But the landscape discvered in the new study was the first f its kind. It is estimated that such an envirnment wuld likely have been ppulated by wildlife. But the area’s fssil recrd is t incmplete t knw which animals may have lived there. The ice abve the ancient landscape measures abut 2.2 kilmeters t 3 kilmeters thick.
The researchers said ne way t learn mre wuld be t drill thrugh the ice and take a piece f the earth belw. This culd uncver evidence shwing ancient life, as was dne with samples taken in Greenland dating back tw millin years ag.
Right befre 34 millin years ag, Antarctica’s landscape and wildlife was likely similar t tday’s cld temperate rainfrests. That includes places like Tasmania, New Zealand and Suth America’s Patagnia area. When the climate cled even mre, an ice sheet grew which cvered the whle cntinent.
    12. Hw lng ag was the landscape nt buried at the latest?
    A. 14 millin years ag.B. 34 millin years ag.
    C. 20 millin years ag.D. 48 millin years ag.
    13. Why des Jamiesn mentin the wrd “snapsht”?
    A. T shw it is hard t explre this lst wrld.
    B. T indicate there exist sme vivid remains.
    C. T present the influence f terrible weather.
    D. T explain the landscape was t warm t live in.
    14. Where des the newly-discvered landscape differ frm thers?
    A. The landscape cntains many hills and muntains.
    B. Animal skeletns have been uncvered in the landscape.
    C. There seems t have existed a mass f wild animals.
    D. The ice abve the landscape is t thick t measure.
    15. What is the prper title fr the passage?
    A. Antarctica Once Witnessed Kinds f Wildlife.
    B. Areas f Rainfrests Fund in Antarctica.
    C. Many Landscapes under Antarctica Discvered.

根据第二段中Stewart Jamiesn所说的话“The landscape is like a snapsht f the past(这里的景观就像是过去的快照)”以及“It is difficult t knw what this lst wrld might have lked like befre the ice came alng, but it was certainly warmer back then. Ancient palm tree pllen has been discvered frm Antarctica, nt far frm ur study site.(很难知道在冰出现之前,这个失落的世界会是什么样子,但当时肯定更温暖。在离我们研究地点不远的南极洲发现了古老的棕榈树花粉)”可知,研究地点的冰下景观就像是过去被拍下的快照一样被定格,当时气候温暖,而且科学家们在距离这处研究地点不远处发现了古老的棕榈树花粉;由此可推断,杰米森提到“快照”这个词是为了暗示冰下存在一些生动的遗迹。故选B。
    【14题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段的“It is estimated that such an envirnment wuld likely have been ppulated by wildlife.(据估计,这样的环境很可能有野生动物居住)”可知,新发现的景观与其他景观不同的地方在于新发现的的环境中很可能存在野生动物。
根据第一段的“Researchers are using satellites t lk deep under the ice in Antarctica, finding a large ancient landscape buried under the cntinent’s ice sheet. (研究人员正在使用卫星深入南极冰层下,发现了埋藏在该大陆冰盖下的大型古代景观)”以及全文可知,本文主要介绍了科学家借助卫星在南极的冰雪之下发现了一处远古景观。所以“埋藏在南极冰层中的远古景观”适合作本文的标题。故选D。

空前内容“Emerging research suggests that curses in lwer-ranked universities, n average, scred higher n teaching than curses in higher-ranked universities.(最新的研究表明,排名较低的大学的课程在教学方面的平均得分高于排名较高的大学的课程。)”以及空后内容“The absence f teaching excellence frm the rankings is surprising given the link between high-quality teaching and student success. Quality teaching is ne f the mst imprtant predictrs f a wide range f cllege utcmes.(考虑到高质量教学与学生成功之间的联系,排名中没有优秀教学令人惊讶。优质教学是衡量大学成绩的最重要因素之一。)”讲述的都是大学排名中没有考虑到教学。选项G“In fact, universities ften shift emphasis frm teaching t ther ranking factrs.(事实上,大学经常把重点从教学转移到其他排名因素上。)”与上下文内容相一致,故选G。
    【19题详解】
根据空前内容“Rankings, hwever, are nly ne reasn why a lw value is placed n teaching in higher educatin. Administratrs ften dn’t view teaching excellence as a way t increase enrlment (注册) r funding.(然而,排名只是高等教育中对教学重视程度较低的一个原因。管理者通常不会将卓越的教学视为增加入学率或资金的一种方式。)”可知,上文分析了教学不被纳入排名的原因,该空应该讲其后果。选项B“Therefre, it’s nt highly valued in hiring r prmtin.(因此,它在招聘或晋升中不受重视。)”
根据下文内容“Nevertheless, nt much will change until schls with high-quality teaching are rewarded with mre resurces, higher rankings and increased enrlments. In the lng term, universities, rganisatins that rank schls, and thers shuld wrk t make teaching a valued, cre part f the missin.(尽管如此,在拥有高质量教学的学校获得更多资源、更高排名和增加入学人数之前,不会有太大变化。从长远来看,大学、学校排名组织和其他机构应该努力使教学成为使命的一个有价值的核心部分。)”可知,此处算是站在大学的角度,提出如何把教学当成他们的首要核心任务。根据“Nevertheless”可知,空处内容和下文内容存在转折关系。选项E“Effrts t imprve teaching at the university level have recently emerged.(在最近,努力改进教学水平的现象已经出现了。)”
