In middle schl, math was my least favrite subject. I understd histry. I lved English. Hwever, math never made sense t me, n matter hw many times I wrked thrugh a prblem. I wanted t be gd at math, but I didn’t think it pssible.
I started taking classes ffered by Art f Prblem Slving (APS) during the summer after my eighth-grade year. I had t admit that in my first class I felt like I was cmpletely unqualified (不合格的) t be in the class, surrunded by s many smart kids. There were times when I felt lst in a sea f materials that I culd never hpe t understand. But slwly and surely, a few weeks later, APS taught me hw t lve the prcess f learning math. I went frm being a kid wh hated math classes t begging my parents t let me take an extra math class n Friday nights.
The mst cmmn wrng idea I hear is that peple wh are skilled at math cme by their skills naturally. Many f my high schl friends laughed at me fr being a math nerd (书呆子). Peple thught that math came easy t me, when, in fact, the exact ppsite was true. Math was nt easy fr me t learn. It was smething I wrked hard at.
Math is ften viewed as a subject yu either “get” r yu dn’t. But mst f math is nt abut natural talent. If peple apprach math thinking they can’t be gd at it, then they have set themselves up t fail. Just like any ther skills, success cmes with practice. There are many great mathematicians in this wrld, but we shuld remember they all had t start at the beginning just like we d.
The skills we learn frm prblem-slving in math can be useful in ur lives. S dn’t give up math. Just remember that yu can learn math well if yu have a right attitude twards it and wrk hard enugh.

What makes a persn a giver r a taker? The idea f "give vs. take" takes shape in all interactins (互动)and relatinships f ur lives. We're either giving advice, making time fr peple, r we're n the receiving end. We keep changing between the tw based n different situatins n a daily basis, if nt an hurly ne.
Accrding t Adam Grant, a prfessr at the University f Pennsylvania, mst peple are matchers. They make careful bservatins n takers and make it a pint fr them t pay smething back. They hate t see peple wh act s generusly twards thers nt receive any rewards. Actually, mst matchers will try hard t imprve and supprt givers s that they can get the gd they deserve.
Is there a gender factr (性别因素) that plays a part in this?
A study led by Hannah Riley Bwles, a prfessr at Harvard University, fcused n this questin. She asked 200 senir managers t sit dwn in pairs where ne persn wuld act as the bss and the ther as an emplyee t discuss salary rise. Male "emplyees" asked fr an average salary f $146 k while the females asked fr nly $141 k. But why did they nt bargain as hard as the men? Simply because they were mre likely t be givers.
As a wman, I d enjy the act f giving up my time, my knwledge, and my care and attentin t thers. I expect anything in return, but I d tend t pull myself away when I feel like I'm being taken fr granted(被认为当然). I als tend t get upset when I see a lved ne's cntinuus actins f kindness g unnticed. S, it's safe t say I'm 50% giver, 35% matcher and 15% taker.
I d knw smene, hwever, wh is 99% giver. They're cntinually devting their time, sharing valuable insights (见解) and ging ut f their way fr everyne wh crsses their path. Althugh they've changed the lives f many peple, they hardly see any f it returned. But the universe is slwly repaying them; they're nw extremely successful, well knwn fr what they d.
