In 1943, a jury (评审委员会) f tp schlars and scientists elected James Yen ne f “the ten greatest revlutinaries f ur time”, listing him alng with Albert Einstein and Orville Wright. Yet all he did was teaching Chinese farmers t read.
Brn in Sichuan in 1890, James Yen graduated frm the Yale University in 1918. After this, he went t France t supprt Chinese wrkers wh had been sent t help the Allies in Wrld War I. Wrking t help and teach them t read and write letters, Yen realized hw much they needed educatin. Therefre, he wrte a simple literacy (读写能力) bk which used nly 1000 basic characters. In the 1920s, inspired by his experiences, Yen rganized the Natinal Assciatin f Mass Educatin Mvements. Its purpse was t bring literacy t the Chinese masses.
Fr 4000 years, reading and writing in China was nly dne by schlars. Everybdy knew, including the farmers themselves, that farmers were incapable f learning. That thrughly deep-seated pint f view was James Yen’s first “impssible” challenge t vercme. The secnd challenge was the Chinese language itself, cnsisting f many characters, each character having rich meanings. The third challenge was the pr technlgy and incnvenient transprtatin. Hw culd James Yen reach the 350 millin farmers back then? These were impssible dds, an impssibly huge gal.
Yet he made it and then expanded his gal: teach the rest f the Third Wrld t read. Practical reading prgrams started pumping ut literate peple like a gushing il well in the Philippines, Thailand, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Kenya, Indnesia, Bangladesh and India. Peple became literate. Fr the first time in their entire histry, they culd access the accumulated knwledge f the human race.
What’s the secret f James Yen’s success? He tried t d smething that seemed impssible. He wrked lng hurs. And he started with what he had in frnt f him and gradually tk n mre and mre, little by little.
    24. Why did James Yen establish the Natinal Assciatin f Mass Educatin Mvements?
    A. T prmte his bk abut Chinese characters.B. T supprt Chinese wrkers in Wrld War I.
    C. T teach Chinese peple t read and write.D. T fllw the example f Einstein.
    25. What prblem did James Yen meet in teaching the farmers?
    A. Schlars’ prtest against it.B. The difficulty f the Chinese language.
    C. Farmers’ inability t learn.D. The shrtage f teaching methds.

When wmen sit tgether t watch a mvie n TV, they usually talk simultaneusly (同时的) abut a variety f subjects, including children, men, careers and what’s happening in their lives. When grups f men and wmen watch a mvie tgether, the men usually end up telling the wmen t shut up. Men can either talk r watch the screen -- they can’t d bth -- and they dn’t understand that wmen can. Besides, wmen cnsider that the pint f all getting tgether is t have a gd time and develp relatinships -- nt just t sit there like cuch ptates staring at the screen.

Since wmen riginally spent their days with the ther wmen and children in the grup, they develped the ability t cmmunicate successfully in rder t maintain relatinships. Fr a wman, speech cntinues t have such a clear purpse: t build relatinships and make friends. Fr men, t talk is t relate the facts.
Men see the telephne as a cmmunicatin tl fr sending facts and infrmatin t ther peple, but a wman sees it as a means f bnding. A wman can spend tw weeks n vacatin with her girlfriend and, when she returns hme, telephne the same girlfriend and talk fr anther tw hurs.
There is n cnvincing evidence that scial cnditining, the fact that girls' mthers talked them mre, is the reasn why girls talk mre than bys. Psychiatrist Dr Michael Lewis, authr f Scial Behaviur and Language Acquisitin, cnducted experiments that fund mthers talked t and lked at, baby girls mre ften than baby bys. Scientific evidence shws parents respnd t the brain bias f their children. Since a girl’s brain is better rganized t send and receive speech,we therefre talk t them mre. Cnsequently, mthers wh try t talk t their sns are usually pinted t receive nly shrt grunts in reply.
    28. While watching TV with thers, wmen Usually talk a lt because they
    A. are afraid f awkward silence with their families and friends
    B. can bth talk and watch the screen at the Same time

    B. Wmen lve t talk because they are mre sciable than men.
    C. Men d nt like talking because they rely mre n facts.
    D. Scial cnditining is nt the reasn why wmen lve talking.

    A. Wmen Are Scially Trained t TalkB. Talking Maintains Relatinships
    C. Wmen Lve t TalkD. Men Talk Differently frm Wmen

There’s beauty in the wds especially late in the fall. Smetimes yu walk amng the huge trees, where the sunlight filters thrugh. It’s quiet and big, with tuches f white and green and gld. And the silence is like that f a church.
It was like that the last time I was in the wds. I was alne, packing a rifle, a therms (保温杯) f cffee and three thick sandwiches. I went up int the hills, heading fr a well-used deer trail. Sure enugh there were fresh tracks in the snw. I turned ver a few rcks t clear the snw and settled dwn behind a little bush. It was pretty cld, but I was dressed fr it and didn’t mind.
I sat there fr abut an hur. It was then that I saw him. A deer, a big beautiful deer! He was ff t my left. There was n cver nearer t him than 30 yards. Surely, I culdn’t miss! I waited fr him t realize I was there. I waited fr him t be shcked and run away. But he fled me cmpletely. He came twards me! He was curius, I suppse, r maybe he was stupid — hw else can yu explain it?
He was nt quite yung. He must have knwn abut men and guns. But he came clser, slwly and purpsefully. His big eyes never mved frm my face. Well, that deer walked right up t where I was sitting. Then he stpped and lked at me!
