Sperm whales(抹香鲸)have the biggest brains f any animal n the planet at up t twenty punds, as much as six times the size f an average human brain. Like many whales and dlphins, sperm whales are highly scial animals and cmmunicate underwater by strings f rapid clicks, which are als used t help them lcate and track their fd.
In a study published in the jurnal Nature Cmmunicatins, researchers analyzed mre than 8. 700 pieces f sperm whale clicks that they believe make up a “phnetic alphabet(音标)”, which the whales can use t build the very rugh equivalent(对应的事物)f what peple think f as wrds and phrases. They say they have fund fur basic cmpnents that they think make up this phnetic alphabet. Pratyusha Sharma, the paper's lead researcher, says this alphabet culd then be used by the whales in an unlimited number f cmbinatins.
