“WHAT IS CIVILISATION?” asked Kenneth Clark 50 years ag in the seminal (开创性的) BBC series n the subject. “I dn’t knw, and I can’t define it in abstract terms, yet. But I think I can recgnize it when I see it, and I’m lking at it nw.” And he turned t gesture behind him, at the saring Gthic twers and flying buttresses f Ntre Dame (巴黎圣母院).
It seems inhuman t care mre abut a building than abut peple. That the sight f Ntre Dame ging up in flames has attracted s much mre attentin than flds in suthern Africa which killed ver 1,000 aruses understandable feelings f guilt. Yet the widespread, intense grief at the sight f the cathedral’s (大教堂) cllapsing steeple (尖塔) is in fact prfundly human — and in a particularly 21st-century way. Familiarity breeds affectin. A building n whse sunny steps yu have rested, in frnt f which yu have taken a selfie with yur lved ne, becmes a warm part f yur memries and thus f yurself. That helps explain why China is in murning — WeChat, yung China’s principal (主要的) means f talking t itself, has been fllwing the stry.
And it will be rebuilt. The effrt t rebuild it will bring peple tgether. Within 24 hurs, €600m ($677m) had been raised frm businesses and rich peple, and a rash f crwdfunding campaigns started.
Yet the emtins the sight arused were less abut the building itself than abut what lsing it might mean. Ntre Dame is an expressin f humanity at its cllective best. Its survival thrugh 850 years f plitical turbulence — thrugh war, revlutin and Nazi ccupatin — binds the present t the past.
It will never be the same, but that is as it shuld be. As Victr Hug wrte in “The Hunchback f Ntre Dame”, a three-vlume lve-letter t the cathedral: “Great edifices (建筑物), like great muntains, are the wrk f centuries. Art is ften transfrmed as it is being made… Time is the architect, the natin is the builder.”
    32. What can we infer accrding t Paragraph 1?
    A. Kenneth Clark is a staff (职员) in BBC.
    B. Kenneth Clark believes that Ntre Dame is a symbl f civilizatin.
    C. Civilizatin is s abstract that Kenneth Clark can’t recgnise it.
    D. Ntre Dame is the subject f the BBC series.
    33. Why has the sight f Ntre Dame ging up in flames attracted s much attentin accrding t the passage?
    A. Because the sunny steps in Ntre Dame fr peple t rest n is impressive.
    B. Because Ntre Dame has bsted the lcal ecnmy.
    C. Because numerable peple arund the wrld has been there and left gd memries.
    D. Because scial media like WeChat in China help mre peple knw it.
    34. Which f the fllwing can best explain the underlined wrd in Paragraph 4?
    A. currentB. partiesC. pwerD. disrder
    35. What’s the main idea f the last paragraph?
    A. The essence (精髓) f Ntre Dame will be lst if we rebuild it.
    B. It is difficult t rebuild Ntre Dame.
    C. If it were nt fr the fire, Ntre Dame wuld always stay the same.
    D. Ntre Dame will change as time ges by even withut the fire.
