In Shark Bay, Australia, unrelated bttlense dlphins have exhibited a remarkable behavir— they have been bserved teaching each ther a nvel way t use a tl. This is a behavir that, until recently, scientists had nly witnessed in humans and ther great apes. Furthermre, this marks the first knwn instance f dlphins passing dwn such knwledge within the same generatin, rather than acrss generatins.
The dlphins engage in a practice knwn as shelling. They chase fish int abandned giant snail shells lying n the seabed. After that, they bring these shells t the surface and shake them with their nses, remving the water and capturing the fish that escape.
"The fact that shelling is scially transmitted amng dlphin peers rather than between mther and child sets an imprtant milestne," senir study authr Michael Krutzen said.
In 2007, Krutzen launched a study f Shark Bay's dlphins, identifying mre than a thusand individual dlphins ver 11 years. During this time, scientists bserved shelling 42 times amng 19 dlphins. Half f these events ccurred after a marine heatwave in 2011, which may have caused a die-ff amng giant sea snails, leading t mre shells n the seaflr.
Because f the length f their study, scientists had very detailed knwledge f the individual dlphins' family histries, ages, sexes and behavir, making it easier fr them t study the 19 dlphins that practiced shelling. Fr instance, they bserved that the dlphins that practised shelling hung ut with ther shellers, s it's likely that they cpied frm thse they spent time with, says study lead authr Snja Wild.

S the researchers cmbined their data n the dlphin sightings, as well as genetic and envirnmental data, int a cmputer mdel that prpsed varius ways shelling culd be transmitted between dlphins. The mdel that supprted hrizntal (横向的) transmissin was the strngest utcme, accrding t the study.
    12. What can we knw abut bttlense dlphins frm the paragraph?
A . They learn t use tls frm humans. B . They get knwledge acrss generatins. C . They cpy behaviurs frm great apes. D . They have the ability t teach each ther.
    13. Why des the authr mentin the die-ff amng giant sea snails in 2011?
A . T explain the natural cycle f sea snail ppulatins. B . T discuss the impact f climate change n marine life. C . T highlight the challenges faced by dlphins in finding fd. D . T prvide a pssible explanatin fr the increase in shelling behavir.
    14. Accrding t the scientists, shelling dlphins ____.
A . usually hunt n their wn B . live arund areas rich in shells C . cnduct shelling abut fur times a year D . acquire shelling skills frm ther shellers
    15. What's the main purpse f the cmputer mdel?
A . t find ut genetic factrs in shelling transmissin B . t further make sure hw shelling actually spreads C . t explain why shelling nly spreads between peers D . t lk fr new pssible ways fr dlphins t spread shelling
