I was eleven years ld when I asked my mm fr pian lessns in 2010. We were in the ecnmic crisis. She said a plite “n”.
That didn’t stp me. I searched the measurements f a keybard, drew the keys n a piece f paper and stuck it n my desk. I wuld click ntes n an nline keybard and “play” them back n my paper ne — keeping the sund they made n the cmputer in my head. I spent six mnths playing withut tuching a real pian. Once my mm saw that I was serius, she brrwed mney and bught me ten lessns.
I still remember the first ne. I was struck by hw real the sund f the pian was. I sat my Grade One after eight lessns. Once I started secndary schl, we culdn’t affrd lessns again. I passed Grade Three, and then Grade Five, practicing nly n my piece f paper.
One evening, when I was abut thirteen, my mm said she had a surprise fr me; it was an electrnic keybard, bught with mre brrwed mney. It was the first time I’d played fr her. She was in astnishment.
My schl didn’t ffer music A-level. I fund the Purcell Schl fr yung musicians. But I had t pass a difficult test. T my amazement, I was ffered a place. At the Purcell Schl, I spent tw years wrking as hard as I culd, perfrmed t raise mney and saved enugh t buy my first pian. When I left the Purcell Schl, I was awarded the senir pian prize and senir academic music prize. I am nw at the Guildhall Schl in Lndn. I feel prud — it’s been ten years since I drew my paper pian, and I’m at ne f the wrld’s leading music schls.
The irny is that I cntinue t d a lt f my practice away frm the pian — what we call mental practice. The paper pian helped aruse my curisity abut hw music wrks and the building blcks that frm the pieces, being a reminder f hw I held n t what I lve — pian.

Virtual reality (VR) is quickly becming the new technlgical frntier. Hwever, a set f challenges and hurdles need t be vercme, including things like lw latency, the high refresh rate, high reslutin and a wide field f view.
Nw that we can actually build VR headsets that begin t meet these requirements, we are seeing a rising interest in VR. As it rises, s des the interest in creating new media t be experienced by using VR. Jurnalism is a medium built n relevance. Jurnalists shuld always be finding new ways t tell stries and deliver cntent. VR is a gldmine fr strytelling. What better way t tell a stry t smene than t put them right in the center f it?
By using VR, the cnsumer isn’t just reading r watching smething played ut; they’re experiencing it. The super-realistic effect f VR allws peple t cnnect them with the subject matter n a much deeper level than just reading abut it. Any stryteller wanting t d smething mre interesting than their peers shuld surely be cnsidering the pwer f VR.
The questin f VR, thugh, is nt hw pwerful it is. It is apparent that the questin f VR is its availability. Telling stries must be easy t d, and access t thse stries must be readily available. This is the biggest challenge that VR faces. If the tls t tell a stry with VR aren’t easy t pick up and learn, VR will fail. If VR isn’t bth tp-f-the-line and affrdable, VR will fail.
Accessibility is ne cncern fr Thmas Hallaq. Hwever, he thinks VR is still very prmising. Hallaq said, “We’re seeing mre technlgy becming accessible, and mre peple having access t that technlgy. Just lk at smartphnes.” If the technlgy is widely available and cmpanies can vercme the hurdles, VR will succeed in being a desirable means f strytelling. Like radi, TV and the Internet befre it, VR will change the way we tell stries.
8. Why is VR cnsidered a pwer tl fr jurnalism?
A. It entertains the cnsumers.B. It delivers cntent very fast.
C. It is equipped with imprved headsets.D. It gets peple’s senses fully invlved.
9. What is the biggest challenge fr VR as a jurnalism tl?
A. Easy access.B. New resurces.
C. Public acceptance.D. Technical barriers.
10. What des the underlined expressin “tp-f-the-line” in paragraph 4 prbably mean?
A. The lngest in histry.B. The highest in price.
C. The best in quality.D. The largest in quantity.
11 Which f the fllwing is the best title fr the text?
A. Appraches t emplying VR.
B. VR: the future f strytelling.
C. Secrets f the increasing ppularity f VR.
D. Strytelling ability: the quality f jurnalists.

Widespread descriptins f animals in pp culture culd actually be hurting the animals’ survival chances in the wild, new research suggests.
Franck Curchamp f the University f Paris-Sud was interested in the idea f “appeal” in animals. He wanted t knw: What species d peple cnsider appealing? And what are the influences f being appealing n ppulatins in the wild?
In a research published this mnth, Curchamp and ther researchers list the tp twenty appealing species. Mst f the animals identified as appealing are large mammals living n land. Cming in first place were tigers, fllwed by lins, elephants, giraffes, panthers, pandas, cheetahs, plar bears, wlves, and grillas. Hwever, at least half f the interviewees didn’t realize that five f the tp ten mst appealing species are threatened. It is cntradictry that we haven’t been able t prtect the species we care abut the mst.
The study als fund that we are flded with images f these creatures, even as they are becming fewer in the wild. The study suggests that t much f imaginatin might be creating a “virtual ppulatin” f the animals in peple’s minds, making them believe there are far mre individuals in the wild than is exact.
The study suggests that cmpanies benefiting frm the use f these images shuld set aside a small percentage f their prfits fr prtectin effrts and infrmatin al campaigns. “That wuld be nt nly smething fair, but that wuld be smething that culd bring a win-win situatin fr them,” Curchamp says. “It culd bring them psitive public relatin, fr instance. Besides, if a cmpany’s masct (吉祥物) ges extinct, that culd hurt them frm a marketing pint. But nt enugh cmpanies are “truly cncerned abut the prtectin f the species that they wrk n,” he adds.
12. What is the influence f the widespread images f animals in pp culture?
A. It raises peple’s wildlife prtectin awareness.
B. It des gd t the survival f appealing animals.
C. It makes a false impressin f the animals’ real situatin.
D. It brings a win-win situatin fr bth animals and cmpanies.
13. What can we learn frm paragraph 3?
A. It is natural t regard the large mammals as attractive.
B. Mre than half f the tp ten appealing species are prtected.
C. It is strange that peple’s thughts cntrast with their behavir.
D. It is terrible that the species are dying ut at an alarming speed.
14. Hw des Curchamp list the cmpanies’ respnsibilities and advantages in the last paragraph?
A. By giving examples.B. By using numbers.
C. By making definitins.D. By making cmparisns.
15. What’s Curchamp’s attitude t the cmpanies benefiting frm animal images?
A. Uncncerned.B. Psitive.C. Supprtive.D. Dissatisfied.
