While my friend later tld me that it was a traditinal Catalan dance called La Sardana, I was cnfused at what I saw! It seemed s strange but s lvely that they were ding this dance cmpletely fr themselves. In fact, they were s int it that they didn’t even seem t ntice ur grup f abut thirty turists standing and watching them.
Once we had been fully entertained by the dancers, we finally went inside fr Calctada and it was revealed t me what it actually was. We sat dwn at the table and a huge plate f leeks(大葱)was placed in frnt f us. It was explained t us that we had t peel(剥)the leeks with ur fingers, dip them in a. delicius sauce, and then hang them ver ur muths in an attempt t eat them. This sunded easier than it was. By the end f the meal, we were all abslutely cvered in sticky black charcal(木炭)n ur hands, arms and even ur faces.
My friend had been right. It had been an extremely fun day and it felt great t get invlved in a lcal traditin f a place I was temprarily calling my hme. It really inspired me t learn mre abut the Catalan culture, althugh hpefully next time it wuld be smething less messy!

A grup f scientists have uncvered a simple lg(原木)structure frm the Stne Age that may be the ldest evidence f early humans’ building with wd. It’s nearly half a millin years ld.
The leader Larry Barham and his team dug up the lg structure—plus a handful f wden tls—frm a riverbed that sits abve a waterfall. They think the lgs culd have been the base fr a bigger structure like a walkway r a platfrm. It suggests that the humans were mre advanced than previusly thught and they were able t adjust t their envirnment and build structures t meet their needs, even in the harsh Stne Age wrld.
Usually, wd is rarely fund at such ancient sites as it usually becmes sfter and is gradually destryed and disappears when it cmes int cntract with ther elements. But these materials stayed underwater, which helped prtect them. S when the team uncvered the lgs in 2019, they were still able t see sme signs that early humans had shaped them. “Everything just lks s riginal, causing yu t think, ‘It cannt be this ld,’” Barham said.
Figuring ut mre details was challenging, since traditinal dating techniques culdn’t get deep enugh int the past. During the prcess, the scientists used a new methd called “luminescence dating”, which uses tiny minerals in the sand t measure hw lng materials have been buried. The new dating methd has far-reaching effects, allwing scientists t date much further back in time.
The lg structure was made at least 476,000 years ag, while the wden tls are much yunger, under 400,000 years ld. That places the materials in a time befre ur species, Hm sapiens(智人), develped. That might have been made by anther kind f early human cusin—pssibly Hm heidelbergensis(海德堡人). If these ancient humans were putting effrt int the furniture f the site, it suggests that they may have stayed fr a while r made regular visits, accrding t Dirk Leder, wh was nt invlved with the research. “The lg structure is an imprtant windw int what these humans were capable f,” he added.
    28. What can we infer frm the discvery f this lg structure?
    A. It shws the early humans were less advanced than thught befre.
    B. It explains the natural challenges early humans faced.
    C. It reflects the richness and value f natural resurces.
    D. It shws early humans’ intelligence and adaptability.
    29. What cntributed t prtecting the ld materials?
    A. Their staying under the grund.
    B. Their lying belw the water surface.
    C. Their being cvered with a strange material.
    D. Their keeping dry in a favrable envirnment.
    30. Why was the luminescence dating methd used?
    A. T ensure mre exact judgement f the materials’ age.
    B. T prve the presence f Hm sapiens at the site.
    C. T uncver previusly unknwn histrical events.
    D. T research the early use f tiny minerals.
    31. Which f the fllwing des Dirk Leder prbably express in the last paragraph?
    A. Hm sapiens shared living space with Hm heidelbergensis.
    B. Early humans’ cnstructin shws signs f their capability.
    C. Hm sapiens was the first t design wden buildings.
    D. Ancient humans led a cmpetitive lifestyle.

HELSINKI—Driven by a passin fr giant pandas, Finnish scientists are learning hw t cultivate bamb in freezing temperatures nt nrmally beneficial t grwing the primary fd surce fr these special animals.
In early 2018, a pair f giant pandas frm China made their first public appearance at the Ahtari Z in central Finland. It was the first time that pandas had cme t live in Nrthern Eurpe, and the event was met with great enthusiasm frm the Finnish public. The pandas, Hua Ba and Jin Baba, were nicknamed “Pyry” and “Lumi” —meaning “heavy snwfall” and “snw” —by their hsts in Finland.
Meanwhile, tw years befre their arrival, a grup f lcal farmers had taken up the challenge f grwing bamb in the cuntry where temperatures ften fall t belw 30 degrees Celsius in winter. The farmers have persevered despite failures and difficulties, and their effrts are nw bearing fruit as they have succeeded in grwing bamb in the extreme cld.
Over the years, agricultural advisr Jari Lukkakalli has becme an expert n bamb cultivatin, driven by the desire t build the best pssible fd reserves fr the pandas. “I think the pandas prefer the bamb that I bring t them,” Lukkakalli said. “It is fresh and lcal.”
Arund 50 farmers jined in the bamb cultivatin prject when it was first launched in 2016. “The first year was very, very hard,” Lukkakalli said. “When the temperature drpped t minus 30 in Nvember and December, we lst every single bamb plant.” The next year, the farmers started all ver again, he said. “And we came t understand that we had t better prtect the bamb.” Lking back n such experiences, Lukkakallall stressed that it was imprtant t adpt techniques suitable fr Finland’s climate. Fr example, snw can be used as a natural insulatr(绝缘体)fr bamb plants.
When Lukkakalli learned that bamb grws in China’s cl, slightly wet muntainus areas, he was cnvinced it culd als grw in snwy Finland. “The snw actually prvides the best prtectin fr the bamb, an evergreen plant,” Eukkakalli said. Cvering bamb with snw ensures enugh misture(湿度)fr the leaves, he said, s that they remain green and fresh. By cnducting experiments and learning frm mistakes, Lukkakalli said he discvered Finland-specific ways t prtect bamb, which is crucial fr sustaining the pandas’ diet lcally.
Finland’s lcal bamb prductin currently makes up just a small part f the fd supply fr the tw giant pandas, prviding an alternative when extreme situatins culd affect the timely arrival f imprted bamb. “Grwing, bamb is ur hbby, nt a business,” Lukkakalli said, adding that he and his clleagues are delighted t be able t prvide sme backup(后援)fd reserves fr the lvely pandas in Ahtari. “My grandsns are als very prud f me because what I’m ding fr the tw pandas is special.”
    32. What des the underlined wrd “persevered” in Paragraph 3 mean?
    A. Brken dwn.B. Given up.
    C. Kept trying.D. Cntinued wrrying.
    33. Why did Lukkakalli say the first year t plant bamb was rather difficult?
    A. All the bamb shts died frm lack f water.
    B. The utput f bamb plants was very small.
    C. All the bamb plants were frzen t death.
    D. The bamb plants grew very slwly.
    34. Hw d Lukkakalli and his clleagues keep the bamb leaves green and fresh?
    A. By grwing the bamb plants in greenhuses.
    B. By using snw t cver the bamb plants.
    C. By spraying sme special chemicals n the plants.
    D. By watering the plants frm time t time.
    35. What can be the best title fr the news reprt?
    A. Cultivating bamb fr pandas in Finland
    B. Pandas have been used t living in Finland
    C. Finland-specific ways t prtect bamb
    D. Bamb can grw in snwy Finland
