A new attempt t predict earthquakes with the aid f artificial intelligence (AI) has raised hpes that the technlgy culd ne day be used t limit earthquakes’ impact n lives and ecnmies. Develped by researchers at The University f Texas at Austin, the AI algrithm crrectly predicted 70% f earthquakes a week befre they happened during a seven-mnth trial in China.
The AI was trained t find unusual patterns in real-time seismic data that researchers had paired with the data f previus earthquakes. The utcme was a weekly frecast in which the AI successfully predicted 14 earthquakes within abut 200 miles f where it estimated they wuld happen and at almst exactly the calculated strength. It missed ne earthquake and gave eight false warnings.
It’s nt yet knwn if the same apprach will wrk at ther lcatins, but the effrt is a significant achievement in research fr AI-driven earthquake frecasting.
“Predicting earthquakes is the ultimate gal,” said a prfessr, wh is a member f the research team. “We’re nt yet clse t making predictins fr anywhere in the wrld, but what we achieved tells us that what we thught was an impssible prblem is slvable in principle.”
The researchers said that their methd had succeeded by fllwing a relatively simple machine learning apprach. The AI was given a set f statistical features based n the team’s knwledge f earthquake physics, then tld t train itself n a five-year database f seismic recrdings. Once trained, the AI gave its frecast by listening fr signs f incming earthquakes amng the backgrund rumblings in the Earth.
“Our future gal is t cmbine bth physics and data-driven methds t create a generalized system that we can apply anywhere in the wrld,” said the AI’s lead develper. “The new research is an imprtant step twards achieving that gal.”

Plants have been imprtant t humans since ancient times. They give us fd, clthes and shelter. Their beauty brings us happiness, and many plants can als cure us. Recently, scientists fund a plant that can better clean plluted air.
Scientists at a research institutin in the UK studied hw well plants can capture(捕获)pllutin frm cars. Car exhaust fumes(汽车尾气), as well as tire and brake particles, cause many health prblems. Since previus research has shwn that trees help remve air pllutin, researchers decided t test three types f plants: hawthrn, western red cedar, and franchet’s ctneaster(西南枸子).
Researchers fund that franchet’s ctneaster was the best at capturing pllutin. This is because f its hairy and cmplex leaf structure. They als discvered that thick barriers ver six feet high were the best at reducing pllutin. In areas with heavy traffic, franchet’s ctneaster absrbed 20% mre pllutin than the ther plants.
A c-authr f the study said, “We knw that in just seven days, a 1-meter length f well-managed thick barrier will capture the same amunt f pllutin that a car emits(排放) ver a 500-mile drive.” The researchers recmmend planting franchet’s ctneaster alng busy rads.
This is great news fr city planners, landscapers, and gardeners. Originally frm China, franchet’s ctneaster is a hardy evergreen that can survive temperatures as lw as -23℃. It grws well in the UK and can als grw well in places like Califrnia, the Pacific Nrthwest, British Clumbia, and arund the Great Lakes.
Thanks t this study, franchet’s ctneaster has shwn t be very useful. It allws gardeners and landscapers t help the envirnment. When these super plants are grwn in urban gardens, n streets, and alng highways, they will clean the air and add beauty t the surrundings.

A. Varieties f plants.B. Living envirnment.
C. Benefits f plants.D. Medical prperties.
33. Why is franchet’s ctneaster effective in capturing pllutin?
A. It requires less water.
B. It is taller than ther plants.
C. It grws faster than ther plants.
D. It has hair y and cmplex leaf structures.
34. What can we infer abut franchet’s ctneaster frm paragraph 5?
A. They will be planted less by gardeners.
B. They will be imprted mre frm China.
C. They can adjust t the cld temperature.
D. They shuld be planted in crrect places.
35. What is the authr’s purpse in writing the last paragraph?
A. T highlight the envirnmental benefits f franchet’s ctneaster.
B. T describe the appearance f franchet’s ctneaster.
C. T cmpare franchet’s ctneaster with ther plants.
