They asked subjects t chse between smaller immediate rewards and larger rewards that they had t wait fr. The lnger they waited, the bigger the reward. Brain activity was bserved using functinal MRI, which shws which parts f the brain are active during decisin-making.
The brain bservatin revealed interesting differences when it came t each type f reward. When peple made decisins abut mney, brain areas respnsible fr thinking abut the future and self-cntrl were mre active. When deciding abut fd, the areas that are linked t immediate satisfactin were mre invlved. This means that ur decisin-making pattern depends n the type f reward that we are presented with.
By understanding hw ur brains respnd t different types f rewards, we may develp better tls that cntrl hw we make thse decisins that may have serius cnsequences in ur lives. Prfessr Pleger believes that understanding these differences can lead t new treatments fr impulsive behavirs and addictins.
