HELSINKI-Driven by a passin fr giant pandas, Finnish scientists are learning hw t cultivate bamb in freezing temperatures nt nrmally beneficial t grwing the primary fd surce fr these special animals.
In early 2018, a pair f giant pandas frm China made their first public appearance at the Ahtari Z in central Finland. It was the first time that pandas had cme t live in Nrthern Eurpe, and the event was met with great enthusiasm frm the Finnish public. The pandas, Hua Ba and Jin Baba, were nicknamed “Pyry” and “Lumi”—meaning “heavy snwfall” and “snw”—by their hsts in Finland.
Meanwhile, tw years befre their arrival, a grup f lcal farmers had taken up the challenge f grwing bamb in the cuntry where temperatures ften fall t belw 30 degrees Celsius in winter. The farmers have persevered despite failures and difficulties, and their effrts are nw bearing fruit as they have succeeded in grwing bamb in the extreme cld.
Over the years, agricultural advisr Jari Lukkakalli has becme an expert n bamb cultivatin, driven by the desire t build the best pssible fd reserves fr the pandas. “I think the pandas prefer the bamb that I bring t them,” Lukkakalli said. “It is fresh and lcal.”
Arund 50 farmers jined in the bamb cultivatin prject when it was first launched in 2016. “The first year was very, very hard,” Lukkakalli said. “When the temperature drpped t minus 30 in Nvember and December, we lst every single bamb plant. “The next year, the farmers started all ver again,” he said. “And we came t understand that we had t better prtect the bamb.” Lking back n such experiences, Lukkakalli stressed that it was imprtant t adpt techniques suitable fr Finland’s climate. Fr example, snw can be used as a natural insulatr (绝缘体) fr bamb plants.
When Lukkakalli learned that bamb grws in China’s cl, slightly wet muntainus areas, he was cnvinced it culd als grw in snwy Finland. “The snw actually prvides the best prtectin fr the bamb, an evergreen plant,” Lukkakalli said. Cvering bamb with snw ensures enugh misture (湿度) fr the leaves, he said, s that they remain green and fresh. By cnducting experiments and learning frm mistakes, Lukkakalli said he discvered Finland-specific ways t prtect bamb, which is crucial fr sustaining the pandas diet lcally.
Finland’s lcal bamb prductin currently makes up just a small part f the fd supply fr the tw giant pandas, prviding an alternative when extreme situatins culd affect the timely arrival f imprted bamb. “Grwing bamb is ur hbby, nt a business,” Lukkakalli said, adding that he and his clleagues are delighted t be able t prvide sme backup (后援) fd reserves fr the lvely pandas in Ahtari. “My grandsns are als very prud f me because what I’m ding fr the tw pandas is special.”
    32. What des the underlined wrd “persevered” in Paragraph 3 mean?
    A. Cheered up.B. Given up.C. Kept trying.D. Cntinued wrrying.
    33. Why did Lukkakalli say the first year t plant bamb was rather difficult?
    A. All the bamb shts died frm lack f water.
    B. The utput f bamb plants was very small.
    C. All the bamb plants were frzen t death.
    D. The bamb plants grew very slwly.
    34. Hw des Lukkakalli keep the bamb leaves green and fresh?
    A. By watering the plants frm time t time.
    B. By using snw t cver the bamb plants.
    C. By spraying sme special chemicals n the plants.
    D. By grwing the bamb plants in greenhuses.
    35. What can be the best title fr the text?
    A. Cultivating bamb fr pandas in Finland
    B. Pandas have been used t living in Finland
    C. Finland-specific ways t prtect bamb
    D. Bamb can grw in snwy Finland

Peple may ften think back t the gd ld days in their frmer schls. In the charm f schl life, where classrms are seats f learning and the schlyard becmes a surce f memry, there are a number f stries mixed with humr, warmth, and teacher-student relatinships.

His classrm was a wrld f its wn, full f clrful characters and brilliant ideas. One day, during the nn break, a student named Julie nticed a yung cat wandering with fairly quick, light and quiet steps thrugh the familiar grunds where many schlyard tales were brn. Julie tk her t Mr. Brwn, wh had magical tricks fr handling even the smallest things. With Mr. Brwn’s permissin, Julie and her classmates built a shelter fr the cat in a crner f the campus.

She played n desks, slept in chairs, and hid in flders, thus becming an unfficial masct (吉祥物) f the classrm. The students fund cmfrt in her presence, and Mr. Brwn was quite happy t watch them grw thrugh her cmpany.
