The pandas, Hua Ba and Jin Baba, were nicknamed “Pyry” and “Lumi” — meaning “heavy snwfall” and “snw” — by their hsts in Finland.
    Meanwhile, tw years befre their arrival, a grup f lcal farmers had taken up the challenge f grwing bamb in the cuntry where temperatures ften fall t belw 30 degrees Celsius in winter. The farmers have persevered despite failures and difficulties, and their effrts are nw bearing fruit as they have succeeded in grwing bamb in the extreme cld.
    Over the years, agricultural advisr Jari Lukkakalli has becme an expert n bamb cultivatin, driven by the desire t build the best pssible fd reserves fr the pandas. “I think the pandas prefer the bamb that I bring t them,” Lukkakalli said. “It is fresh and lcal.”
    Arund 50 farmers jined in the bamb cultivatin prject when it was first launched in 2016. “The first year was very, very hard,” Lukkakalli said. “When the temperature drpped t minus 30 in Nvember and December, we lst every single bamb plant.” The next year, the farmers started all ver again, he said. “And we came t understand that we had t better prtect the bamb.” Lking back n such experiences, Lukkakallall stressed that it was imprtant t adpt techniques suitable fr Finland’s climate. Fr example, snw can be used as a natural insulatr (绝缘体) fr bamb plants.
    When Lukkakalli learned that bamb grws in China’s cl, slightly wet muntainus areas, he was cnvinced it culd als grw in snwy Finland. “The snw actually prvides the best prtectin fr the bamb, an evergreen plant,” Eukkakalli said.
