Jhn Byntn Priestley (1894-1984) was brn in the English cunty f Yrkshire, and knew early n that he wanted t becme a writer. When Wrld War I brke ut, Priestley jined the army, and escaped death n a number f ccasins.
After the war, he gained a degree frm Cambridge University, and then mved t Lndn, where he wrked as a freelance (adj. 自由职业的) writer. During Wrld War II, he presented a weekly radi prgramme, which became immensely (adv. extremely) ppular.
