Funding f $2 millin has gne t researchers develping a new type f slar sail as part f NASA Innvative Advanced Cncepts (NIAC) prgramme, which backs prjects that have the ptential t transfrm future missins.
Traditinally, slar sails wrk by reflecting sunlight — each particle f light that bunces ff the thin, shiny material gives a small amunt f pwer t the craft. One big limitatin is that if yu want t mve in any directin ther than directly away frm the sun, yu have t rtate (旋转) the entire sail, s such craft aren’t particularly flexible.
Amber Dubill at Jhns Hpkins University in Maryland and her team have develped a slutin t this disadvantage. They are wrking n a sail made f a diffractive (衍射的) material, ne that can bunce light in varius directins withut having t be rtated. It des this via tiny ridges (脊) in the material; the directin f which can be changed by running an electric current thrugh the sail. The resulting sail wuld have a rainbw appearance.
When the light bunces sideways, it wuld push the entire spacecraft t the side rather than directly frwards. “Even a small side way kick turns ut t be significant when yu’re trying t push in a directin that wuld be difficult r impssible t d by physically rtating the entire sail,” says NIAC science adviser Rn Turner.
Dubill and her team have prpsed a missin n which t use their new slar sail. The spacecraft wuld use this new sail t get t a plar rbit arund the sun and bserve its tp and bttm, which is difficult t d with traditinal spacecraft.
The researchers plan t test varius materials fr hw well they wrk n the sail and in space, while als develping tracks and instruments fr the slar missin. If all prceeds withut a hitch, at the end f the tw-year NIAC award the team will be ready t send a grup f spacecraft arund the sun.
12. What’s the disadvantage f the traditinal slar sails?
A. They are nt efficient t rtate t the directin needed.
B. They can nly be made t reflect a small amunt f sunlight.
C. They are made f heavy materials that are hard t carry.
D. Even with a small mve, yu have t turn the whle sail.
13. What can we knw abut the new slar sail?
A. With it spacecraft wuld reach a plar rbit.
B. It can d part f wrk f the traditinal sail.
C. N ideas have been made abut the access t it.
D Scientists plan t use ne material n it.
14. What des the underlined part “prceeds withut a hitch” in the last paragraph mean?
A. Is designed.B. Keeps up.
C. Ges well.D. Fails finally.
15. What’s the best title fr the text?
A. Advancing Rainbw-clured Slar Sail Prject
B. Making Up fr the Shrtage f Energy in Space Tur
C. Transfrming Sunlight int Pwer t the Craft

A. They are nt efficient t rtate t the directin needed.
B. They can nly be made t reflect a small amunt f sunlight.
C. They are made f heavy materials that are hard t carry.
D. Even with a small mve, yu have t turn the whle sail.
13 What can we knw abut the new slar sail?
A. With it spacecraft wuld reach a plar rbit.
B. It can d part f wrk f the traditinal sail.
C. N ideas have been made abut the access t it.
D. Scientists plan t use ne material n it.
14. What des the underlined part “prceeds withut a hitch” in the last paragraph mean?

C. Ges well.D. Fails finally.
15. What’s the best title fr the text?
