1. 闭音节：以一个或几个辅音字母（r、w、y除外）结尾且中间只有一个元音字母的音节，如pen、map等。元音字母在重读闭音节中通常发其短音，而不发字母本音。

2. 开音节：分绝对开音节和相对开音节两种。1) 绝对开音节：以单个元音字母结尾的音节，如hi、n等。2) 相对开音节：单个元音字母后加单个辅音字母（r除外），再加一个不发音的字母e构成的音节，如name、bike等。
总结：五个元音字母有两种发音，开音节读长音（即字母本身的读音），闭音节读短音。
