“Batteries stre renewable energy fr when it's needed, nt just when it's prduced. This is crucial fr getting the mst ut f wind and slar pwer,” Jiang said. “Energy generatin and energy cnsumptin is always mismatched. That's why it's imprtant t have a device that can stre that energy temprarily and release it when it's needed.”
They described their nvel design in the jurnal Nature Cmmunicatins.
Traditinal car batteries cntain a mix f sulfuric acid and water. While they're inexpensive and made frm readily available materials, they have severe drawbacks fr industrial r largescale use. They have a very lw energy density (密度), which isn't suitable fr string sufficient pwer needed t pwer a city. And they have a lw level fr electrchemical stability, which means they can blw up.
Water has a vltage (电压) limit. Once the vltage f such a battery ges beynd the stability windw f 1.5 vlts, the water can decmpse int hydrgen and xygen, which is explsive.
But Jiang and his students have develped a battery withut water that can generate nearly 4 vlts f pwer. Jiang's nvel design des s by remving frm a battery the membrane, which is a huge cmpnent f upfrnt csts and accunts fr as much as 30% f the cst f the battery. They invented a new type f energy strage material that imprves perfrmance at a lwer cst. “Membranes are als inefficient. They can't separate the psitive and negative sides cmpletely, s there is always crssver,” he said.
The grup has submitted temprary patent applicatins. “There is still a lng way t g, but we're advancing tward a dramatic battery transfrmatin in the next decade. I'm cnfident abut that. There is a lt f intense research ging int pushing the bundaries f battery perfrmance,” Jiang said.
