Researchers knw that the prehistric circle’s uter stnes cme frm nearby areas in England. But even after a century f study, the Altar Stne near the center f Stnehenge remains difficult t understand.
The Altar Stne belngs t a grup f Stnehenge building blcks knwn as the bluestnes, which came frm areas far frm Stnehenge. Researchers have fund that sme f the bluestnes cme frm as far as 225 kilmeters away.
“It’s a massive jb f transprt,” says Richard Bevins, an earth scientist at Aberystwyth University in Wales. His team is lking fr the surce f the Altar Stne. Uncvering the stne’s rigins culd suggest which ancient grups f peple cntributed t the building.
Scientists have been wrking t find the rck’s rigins since 1923. A reprt abut the Altar Stne’s minerals back then suggested it might have cme frm a set f rcks in Wales near where ther bluestnes cane frm. Bevins’ team decided t revisit the rck’s riddle with mdern techniques.
In 2021, the team analyzed (分析) the Altar Stne’s chemical makeup using X-rays. The X-ray methd shwed that the Altar Stne has high levels f the element barium (钡). But the stne’s makeup didn’t seem t match the rcks in Wales.
In the new study, the team cllected 58 samples (样本) frm a wider area in England and Wales. Of the 58 sample stnes, fur had high barium levels similar t the Altar Stne. The team then cmpared the verall mineral makeup f thse fur stnes with the Altar Stne. But nne were a match.
