With the drugs that she created. Getrade Elin achieved her life's missin: t relieving human suffering. Beynd the individual drugs she discvered, she pineered a nw, mre scientific apprach t drug develpment that frever changed medical research.
When she was 15, Elin's grandfather died frmcancer painfully. The experience decided her career path. At age 19, with a degree in chemistry, she lked fr wrk. She tk jbs as a secretary, a chemistry teacher, and an unpaid wrker in a lab. Finally, in 1944, Elin fund the jb f her dreams, assisting Gerge Hitchings at Burrughs Wellcme, a drug cmpany.
Hitchings and Elin gave up the traditinal trial-and-errr apprach t drug develpment, in favr f a scientific apprach. Starting frm the understanding that all cells require nucleic acid (核酸) t reprduce, they reasned that rapidly grwing bacteria (细菌) require even mre t keep the pace f grwth. Find a way t disrupt (扰乱) their life cycle, and yu find a way t stp disease.
Elin's first majr discvery was a substance that disrupts the frmatin f leukaemia cells. But the effect failed t last lng. Elin determined t find a way t make the effects f her drug last lnger.
Elin's final majr breakthrugh was in the develpment f the drug acyclvir. Scientists dubted that drugs culd be invented t fight viruses: any substance that wuld kill a virus wuld be pisnus t the bdy. Hwever, thrugh tireless effrts, the drug Elin's team develped culd be used t fight many diseases. Elin's name appears n 45 patents fr life-saving and life-changing drugs.
Thugh her individual discveries were significant, when Elin received the Nbel Prize in Physilgy r Medicine in 1988, it wasn't fr ne particular drug--it was fr a new, mre reasnable apprach t drug develpment. As a result, althugh she died in 1999 at the age f 81, Gertrude Elin is still saving lives.

The US scientists wh created the first living rbts say the life frms, knwn as xenbts, can nw reprduce and in a way nt seen in plants and animals. Xenbts are frmed frm the stem cells f the African clawed frg (Xenpus laevis), frm which it takes its name.
"Frgs have a way f reprducing that they nrmally use, but when yu liberate the stem cells frm the embry (胚胎) and yu give them a chance t figure ut hw t be in a new envirnment, nt nly d they figure ut a new way t mve, but they als figure ut apparently a new way t reprduce," said Michael Levin, a prfessr f bilgy at Tufts University, wh was c-lead authr f the new research.
Stem cells are unspecialized cells that have the ability t develp int different cell types. T make the xenbts, the researchers remved living stem cells frm frg embrys and left them t develp.
" Mst peple think f rbts as being made f metal, but it's nt s much what a rbt is made frm but what it des, which is act n its wn n behalf f peple," said Jsh Bngard, a cmputer science prfessr and rbtics expert at the University f Vermnt and lead authr f the study. "In that way, it's a rbt, but it's als clearly an rganism made frm frg cells."
The researchers fund that the xenbts culd replicate(自我复制). But it happened rarely and nly in specific circumstances. The xenbts used "kinetic replicatin" -a prcess that is knwn t ccur at the mlecular (分子) level.
With the help f artificial intelligence, the researchers then tested billins f bdy shapes t make the xenbts mre effective at this type f replicatin. The supercmputer came up with a C-shape that lked like Pac-Man, the 1980s vide game. They fund it was able t find tiny stem cells(干细胞), gather hundreds f them inside its muth, and a few days later the pack f cells became new xenbts.
"The AI didn't prgram these machines in the way we usually think abut writing cde. It shaped and sculpted and came up with this Pac-Man shape," Bngard said.
"The shape is, in essence, the prgram. The shape influences hw the xenbts behave t speed up this incredibly surprising prcess."
The xenbts are very early technlgy think f a 1940s cmputer- and dn't yet have any practical applicatins. Hwever, this cmbinatin f mlecular bilgy and artificial intelligence culd ptentially be used in many tasks in the bdy and the envirnment. This may include things like cllecting micrplastics in the ceans, inspecting rt systems and regenerative medicine. "There are many things that are pssible if we take advantage f this kind f plasticity and ability f cells t slve prblems," Bngard said.
28. Accrding t Jsh Bngard, a rbt shuld be defined in terms f
A. its materialB. its reliabilityC. its appearanceD. its functin
29. What can we learn abut xenbts frm the passage?
A. AI makes it pssible fr xenbts t replicate mre effectively.
B. Specialized cells play a key rle in the replicatin f xenbts.
C. Xenbts have cpied stem cells using cmputer prgrams.
D. The shape f xenbts was inspired frm a vide game in the 1980s.
30. What is the authr's attitude twards future applicatins f xenbts?
A. Disapprving.B. Optimistic.C. Uncncerned.D. Objective.
31. Which f the fllwing wuld be the best title fr the passage?
A. Where des the unnatural replicatin prcess lead?
B. Are xenbts the future f artificial intelligence? 生物分子和人工智能相结合
C. The uncertain rle f rbt reprductin
D. Fact r fantasy? Rbts can reprduce

The cnstant rise f glbal demand fr prtein pses a threat f meat shrtage in the agricultural sectr. T address this, a few scientists use artificial meat as an alternative t traditinal nes, which frm the grwing prcess t its benefits prves it des n harm r even it des gd t us.
Currently, ne f the mst advanced techniques t grw meat in the lab invlves taking cells frm an animal and changing them t muscle cells. The cells are then cultured with nutrients and essential vitamins and can be develped t any quantity and then shaped int hamburgers, steaks r mince, and s it is als called "cultured" meat. "Cultured meat is nt genetically engineered," Dr. Mark Pst f Maastricht University says. "It is meat grwn frm the same cells that prduce the meat in the cw, but this time utside the cw." He believes that cultured meat shuldn't be any better r wrse fr yu than ld-schl animal flesh.
This may sund like science fictin, but it is nt such a strange idea and there are reasns t be excited abut it. The envirnment impacts f cultured meat culd be lwer than thse f meat prduced in the cnventinal way," said Hanna Tumist, a researcher at Oxfrd University. The prcess wuld require between 7% and 45% less energy than the same vlume f cnventinally prduced meat such as prk, beef r lamb, and culd be engineered t use nly 1% f the land and 4% f the water assciated with cnventinal meat. Tumist's research als shws that cultured meat culd be part f the slutin t feeding the wrld's grwing ppulatin, at the same time cutting emissins (排放) and saving bth energy and water.
Aside frm the abve benefits, cultured meat shuld als prvide cheap nutritin. Animal prtein is an increasing part f diets, as millins f peple in rapidly emerging ecnmies are drawn ut f pverty and becme able t affrd mre meat in their diets. The pressure this creates has been an imprtant factr in rapidly rising grain prices, defrestatin in the Amazn basin, increasing water shrtage and rising pressure t find new farmland. Grwing meat artificially culd ptentially take huge pressure ff farmlands arund the wrld.
Anther benefit wuld be t help animal welfare and prtect endangered species. If mst f ur meat was grwn, there wuld be n need fr factry farms. Cnditins fr animals culd be greatly imprved. Elsewhere, it culd als stp illegal endangered species hunts by prviding an alternative way t prduce meat frm these species.
Exactly hw lng it takes befre the meat is sld in supermarkets depends n the investment in research and develpment. One thing seems clear: Unless vegetarianism catches n in a very big way, the wrld's demand fr meat will sn utpace ur supply f cws, chickens, pigs and ther edible animals. The health and envirnmental impacts f cultured meat aren't ging t be hypthetical (假设的) fr much lnger.
32. What des the underlined wrd "cultured" prbably mean?
A. grwn.B. srted.C. cnnected.D. shaped.
33. Cmpared with traditinal meat, the artificial meat ____________.
A. tastes much betterB. cntains mre nutrients
C. saves mre natural resurcesD. changes peple’s habit f eating meat

A. cmparing the results frm different researches
B. shwing the current situatin f fd cnsumptin
C. presenting the prblems caused by meat shrtage
D. explaining the advantages f the artificial meat
