Mdern inventins have sped up peple’s lives amazingly. Mtr-cars cver a hundred miles in little mre than an hur. Aircraft crss the wrld a day, while cmputers perate at lightning speed. Indeed, this lve f speed seems never-ending. Every year mtr-cars are prduced which g even faster each new cmputer basts (吹嘘) f saving precius secnds in handling tasks.
All this saves time, but at a price. When we lse r gain half a day in speeding acrss the wrld in an airplane, ur bdies tell us s. We get the uncmfrtable feeling knwn as jet-lag; ur bdies feel that they have been left behind in anther time zne. Again, spending t lng at cmputers results in painful wrists and fingers. Mbile phnes als have dangers accrding t sme scientists; t much use may transmit harmful radiatin int ur brains, a cnsequence we d nt like t think abut.
Hwever, what d we d with the time we have saved? Certainly nt relax, r s it seems. We are s accustmed t cnstant activity that we find it difficult t sit and d nthing, r even just ne thing at a time. Perhaps the days are lng gne when we might listen quietly t a stry n the radi, letting imaginatins take us int anther wrld.
There was a time when sme peple’s lives were devted simply t the cultivatin f the land r the care f cattle. N multi-tasking there; their lives went n at a much gentler pace, and in a familiar pattern. There is much that we might envy abut a way f life like this. Yet befre we d s, we must think f the hard tasks ur ancestrs faced: they farmed with bare hands, ften lived clse t hunger, and had t fashin tls frm wd and stne. Mdern machinery has freed peple frm that primitive existence.
24.The new prducts becme mre and mre time-saving because_________.
    A.time is limited B.ur lve n speed seems never-ending
C.the prices are increasingly high D.the manufacturers bast a lt

An internatinal team led by scientists at the Hng Kng University f Science and Technlgy (HKUST) has recently develped the wrld's first 3-D artificial eye with capabilities that even utperfrm thse f the human eyes, bringing visin t humanid rbts and new hpe t patients with visual damage.
Scientists have spent decades trying t prduce the exact cpies f the structure and clarity f a bilgical eye, but visin prvided by existing artificial eyes with external wires are still in pr
reslutin(分辨率) with 2-D flat image sensrs. The Electrchemical Eye (EC-Eye) develped at
HKUST, hwever, may actually ffer sharper visin than a human eye, with extra functins such as the ability t see things in darkness.
The key feature allwing such breakthrughs is a 3-D artificial retina(视网膜), made f nanwire light sensrs which are like the phtreceptr in human retinas. The scientists cnnected the nanwire light sensrs t sme liquid-metal wires serving as nerves behind the human-made retina during the experiment, and successfully carried ut the visual signal transmissin t reflect what the eye sees nt the cmputer screen. In the future, thse nanwire light sensrs culd be directly cnnected t the nerves f the visually damaged patients. Apart frm that, the artificial retina can receive mre light signals and ptentially attain a higher image reslutin than human retina.
With further adjustment, the EC-Eye can be a self-pwered image sensr, s there is n need fr external pwer surce, which will be much mre user-friendly as cmpared with the current technlgy. “The current artificial eyes are still f n match t the human eyes. A new technlgy is in urgent need, and it gives me a strng mtivatin t start this uncnventinal prject. In the next step, we plan t further imprve the perfrmance f ur device. Animal and clinical trials are nw being planned. I think if everything is n track, perhaps in five years, the technlgy will becme practical,” said Prf Fan, whse team has spent nine years t cmplete the current study.
    28. What's the feature f the EC-Eye?
    A. It prvides a clearer visin than human eyes. B. It perfrms better at night than in the day.
    C. It is attached with external wires. D. It uses 2-D flat image sensrs.
    29. What's the functin f nanwire light sensrs?
    A. T send cmputer signals. B. T receive visual signals.
C.T serve as nerves behind the retina. D. T cnnect nerves f patients t the wires.
    30. What can we infer abut the EC-Eye frm Dr Fan's wrds?
    A. It is f n match t human eyes. B. It has been imprved by the team.
    C. It is different frm the previus devices. D.It will be in clinical trials in five years.
    31. What can be the best title fr the text?
    A. EC-Eye Will Becme Ppular in the Near Future
    B. Nanwire Light Sensrs Help Peple See in Darkness
    C. Scientists Have Develped First Artificial Eye with 3-D Retina
    D. 3-D Technlgy Helps t Cure Peple f Their Eye Diseases

Light pllutin is a significant but verlked driver f the rapid decline f insect ppulatins, accrding t the mst cmprehensive review f the scientific evidence t date.
Artificial light at night can affect every aspect f insects' lives, the researchers said. “We strngly believe artificial light at night—in cmbinatin with habitat lss, chemical pllutin, invasive(入侵的) species, and climate change—is driving insect declines,” the scientists cncluded after assessing mre than 150 studies.
Insect ppulatin cllapses have been reprted arund the wrld, and the first glbal scientific review, published in February, said widespread declines threatened t cause a “catastrphic cllapse f nature's ecsystems”.
There are thught t be millins f insect species, mst still unknwn t science, and abut half are active at night. Thse active in the day may als be disturbed by light at night when they are at rest.
The mst familiar impact f light pllutin is mths(飞蛾) flapping arund a bulb, mistaking it fr the mn. Sme insects use the plarisatin f light t find the water they need t breed, as light waves line up after reflecting frm a smth surface. But artificial light can scupper(使泡汤) this. Insects are imprtant prey(猎物) fr many species, but light pllutin can tip the balance in favur f the predatr if it traps insects arund lights. Such increases in predatin risk were likely t cause the rapid extinctin f affected species, the researchers said.
The researchers said mst human-caused threats t insects have analgues in nature, such as
climate change and invasive species. But light pllutin is particularly hard fr insects t deal with.
Hwever, unlike ther drivers f decline, light pllutin is relatively easy t prevent. Simply
turning ff lights that are nt needed is the mst bvius actin, he said, while making lights
mtin-activated als cuts light pllutin. Shading lights s nly the area needed is lit up is imprtant. It is the same with aviding blue-white lights, which interfere with daily rhythms. LED lights als ffer hpe as they can be easily tuned t avid harmful clurs and flicker rates.
    32. What is discussed in the passage?
    A. Causes f declining insect ppulatins.
    B. Cnsequences f insect ppulatin cllapses.
    C. Insect declines: the driver f the cllapsed ecsystem.
    D. Light pllutin: the key bringer f insect declines.
    33. What is the 5th paragraph mainly abut?
    A. Hw light pllutin affects insects. B. Hw light helps insects find fd.
    C. Hw the fd chain is interrelated. D. Hw light travels in space.
    34. What des the underlined wrd “analgues” in Paragraph 6 prbably mean?
    A. Selective things. B. Similar things.
    C. Variatins. D. Limitatins.
    35. What is the purpse f the last paragraph?
    A.T make cmparisns. B. T give examples.
    C. T ffer slutins. D. T present arguments.
