On Octber 8, 2005, a disastrus earthquake struck the Kashmir regin. The earthquake registered a magnitude f 7.6, fllwed by many aftershcks, landslides, and falling rcks. The seriusness f the damage and the high number f deaths were wrsened by pr cnstructins (建筑物) in the affected areas. In Kashmir at least 79,000 peple were killed, and mre than 32,000 buildings fell dwn.
The Haiti Earthquake
At the beginning f 2010, an earthquake hit Haiti. The earthquake registered a magnitude f 7.3 and was fllwed by aftershcks that registered magnitudes f 5.9 and 5.5. Living in Califrnia until 1970, my family has felt a number f earthquakes. We have been frtunate, hwever, t have suffered n bdily harm r prperty damage.
There is a website that lists all Califrnia earthquakes recrded frm 1769 t the present. The site lists the date and time as well as the magnitude and the exact lcatin f any quake that measured mre than 6.0.
There are nly a few quakes that stand ut in my memry and, luckily, nne is shwn n the website. S, my persnal experiences with earthquakes might be cnsidered insignificant.
There are three earthquakes that are difficult t frget. The first ne was in 1955 and ur ldest daughter was walking with me in ur backyard in Redwd City in Califrnia. Besides Phenix and nearby cities, the strm als reached Yuma Cunty in suthwestern Arizna. It reduced the visibility(能见度) in these areas, putting ff the flights at Phenix Sky Harbr Internatinal Airprt.
