Reintrducing beavers (海狸) t Britain culd help clean up rivers, prevent flding and minimise sil lss, an expert has claimed.
Prfessr Richard Brazier, a researcher at the University f Exeter, said unpublished results frm a trial area in Devn shwed muddy water entering an area where beavers were living was three times cleaner when it left. “Our trial has shwn that the beavers are able t dam ur streams in a way that keeps sil in the headwaters f ur catchment (流域) s it desn't blck up rivers dwnstream and pllute ur drinking and bathing waters. If we bring beavers back it's just ne tl we need t slve Britain's crisis f sil lss and agricultural pllutin f waterways, but it's a useful tl,” he said.
Prf Brazier's claims were disputed by the Natinal Farmers' Unin (NFU), which warned that the reintrductin f beavers t Sctland had led t fields and frests becming damaged. Spkesman Mark Ppe said: “The knwledge f the impacts beavers have had n farmland, riverbanks and fld defences in Sctland is cncerning. We await the results f the Devn trial and will analyse the utcmes then.”
Prf Brazier, an expert in Earth Surface Prcesses, insisted the animals culd even play a useful rle in preventing flding. He tld BBC News: “The public is currently paying peple t build leaky dams t keep strm waters in the uplands. The beavers can d it free f charge and even build their wn hmes.”
Hwever, Prfessr Jane Ricksn, a sil specialist frm Cranfield University, Bedfrdshire, jined the NFU in sunding a nte f cautin. She agreed that in sme places in the UK there was evidence f wrrying sil lss, and said new plicies were urgently needed. Beavers may in fact reduce the river channel and remve vegetatin, expsing banks t greater ersin (侵蚀) and increasing, rather than decreasing, the risk f flding, she warned. And she said beaver dams shuld be “leaky” t avid buildups f large vlumes f water.
5.Hw d beavers help clean up rivers, prevent flding and minimise sil lss?
A.By building dams in their wn way.
B.By prtecting the frests r fields.
