After studying agriculture, medicine, and fisheries in cllege, Jhn went back t bserving nature and asking questins. Why can certain plants trap harmful bacteria(细菌)? Which kinds f fish can eat cancer- causing chemicals? With the right cmbinatin f animals and plants, he figured, maybe he culd clean up waste the way nature did. He decided t build what he wuld later call an ec- machine.
The task Jhn set fr himself was t remve harmful substances frm sme sludge (污泥). First, he cnstructed a series f clear fiberglass tanks cnnected t each ther. Then he went arund t lcal pnds and streams and brught back sme plants and animals. He placed them in the tanks and waited. Little by little, these different kinds f life gt used t ne anther and frmed their wn ecsystem. After a few weeks, Jhn added the sludge.
He was amazed at the results. The plants and animals in the ec- machine tk the sludge as fd and began t eat it! Within weeks, it had all been digested, and all that was left was pure water.
Over the years, Jhn has taken n many big jbs. He develped a greenhuse —like facility that treated sewage (污水) frm 1,600 hmes in Suth Burlingtn. He als designed an ec- machine t clean canal water in Fuzhu, a city in sutheast China.

Tp- dwn prcessing is the prcess f using cntext r general knwledge t understand what we perceive (感知). In 1970, psychlgist Richard Gregry intrduced the cncept. He claimed that perceptin is cnstructive.
The prcessing plays an imprtant rle in ur interactins with ur envirnment. Our five senses are cnstantly taking in infrmatin. At any given time, we are experiencing different sights, sunds, tastes, smells, and ways things feel when we tuch them. If we paid attentin t each ne f ur senses all the time, we’d never d anything else. It enables us t simplify the prcess by relying n cn text and ur preexisting knwledge t understand what we ntice. If ur brains didn’t emply tp- dwn prcessing ur senses wuld verwhelm us.
Tp- dwn prcessing helps us understand what ur senses are perceiving in ur daily lives. Fr example, suppse yu receive an imprtant letter but a few drps f water have ruined part f the text. A few letters in different wrds are nw just smudges(污迹). Yet, yu’ re still able t read the letter in its entirety using tp- dwn prcessing. Yu use the cntext f the wrds and sentences in which the smudges appear and yur knwledge f reading t cmprehend the meaning f the letter’s message. See a wrd LO*E, with ne letter kncked dwn, yet yu are still able t quickly recgnize the wrd as LOVE.
On the ne hand, tp- dwn prcessing serves a psitive functin by simplifying the way we cmprehend ur sensry perceptins. It enables us t shrtcut the cgnitive path between ur perceptins and their meaning. On the ther hand, patterns can als prevent us frm perceiving things in unique ways. S we may understand the pattern f hw t use a mbile phne, but if the manufacturer cmes ut with a new phne that emplys cmpletely unique interactin patterns, we may nt be able t figure ut hw t use it. Besides, as ur knwledge is limited and biased(片面的) in certain ways, it can lead t perceptual errrs.
28.What is the authr’s purpse in writing paragraph 2?
A.T explain main reasns.B.T give practical examples.
C.T draw specific cnclusins.D.T analyse theretical framewrks.
29.What maybe the key t understanding a text with missing letters?
A.Pre- existing knwledge.B.Active interactins.
C.Five physical senses.D.Lessns frm mistakes
30.What can we learn frm the last paragraph?
A.Seeing is believing.B.Practice makes perfect.
C.Every cin has tw sides.D.Experience is the best teacher.
31.What des the authr intend t d accrding t the text?
A.Intrduce a reading methd.B.Deepen underlying meanings.
C.Illustrate a cgnitive strategy.D.Clarify a prducing prcess.

Our brains are “prgrammed” t learn mre frm peple we like— and less frm thse we dislike. This has been shwn by researchers in cgnitive neurscience (认知神经科学) in a series f experiments.
Memry serves a vital functin, enabling us t learn frm new experiences and update existing knwledge. We learn bth frm individual experiences and frm cnnecting them t draw new cnclusins abut the wrld. This way, we can make inferences abut things that we dn’t necessarily have direct experience f. This is called memry integratin and makes learning quick and flexible.
T examine what affects ur ability t learn, and make inferences, Ines Brama, assciate- prfessr f psychlgy at Lund University, alng with his c- wrkers, set up experiments where participants were tasked with remembering and cnnecting different bjects. It culd be a bwl, ball, spn, scissrs, r ther everyday bjects. It turned ut that memry integratin was influenced by wh presented it. If it was a persn the participant liked, cnnecting the infrmatin was easier cmpared t when the infrmatin came frm smene the participant disliked. The participants prvided individual definitins f “like” and “dislike” based n aspects such as plitical views, majrs, eating habits, favrite sprts, hbbies, and music.
The findings can be applied in real life, accrding t the researchers. Ines explained: “Suppse a plitician argues fr raising taxes t benefit healthcare. Later, yu visit a healthcare center and ntice imprvements have been made. If yu side with the plitician that wanted t imprve healthcare thrugh higher taxes, yu’ re likely t credit the imprvements t the tax increase, even thugh the imprvements might have had a cmpletely different cause.”
There’s already vast research describing that peple learn infrmatin differently depending n the surce and hw that characterizes plarizatin and knwledge resistance. “What ur research shws is hw these significant phenmena can partly be traced back t fundamental principles that gvern hw ur memry wrks,” says Ines. We tend t frm new cnnectins and update knwledge frm infrmatin presented by grups we favr.
32.Which f the fllwing can best replace the underlined wrd “prgrammed” in Paragraph 1?
A.Enhanced.B.Organized.C.Desire- driven.D.Nature- decided.
33.What did the experiments in Paragraph 3 cnclude?
A.It’s easier t absrb favrable infrmatin.B.It’s beneficial t fcus n everyday bjects.
C.Presenters matter in cnnecting infrmatin.D.Life experiences affect peple’s inferences.
34.Hw did Ines explain the applicatin f his findings?
A.By intrducing a cncept.B.By making an assumptin.
C.By emplying an expert’s wrds.D.By referring t anther experiment.
35.What can be a suitable title fr the text?
A.Hw brains functin in learningB.Wh impacts memry integratin
C.Hw brains learn frm experiencesD.What imprves lng- term memry
