After studying agriculture, medicine, and fisheries in cllege, Jhn went back t bserving nature and asking questins. Why can certain plants trap harmful bacteria（细菌）? Which kinds f fish can eat cancer- causing chemicals? With the right cmbinatin f animals and plants, he figured, maybe he culd clean up waste the way nature did. He decided t build what he wuld later call an ec- machine.
The task Jhn set fr himself was t remve harmful substances frm sme sludge （污泥）. First, he cnstructed a series f clear fiberglass tanks cnnected t each ther. Then he went arund t lcal pnds and streams and brught back sme plants and animals. He placed them in the tanks and waited. Little by little, these different kinds f life gt used t ne anther and frmed their wn ecsystem. After a few weeks, Jhn added the sludge.
He was amazed at the results. The plants and animals in the ec- machine tk the sludge as fd and began t eat it! Within weeks, it had all been digested, and all that was left was pure water.
Over the years, Jhn has taken n many big jbs. He develped a greenhuse —like facility that treated sewage （污水） frm 1,600 hmes in Suth Burlingtn. He als designed an ec- machine t clean canal water in Fuzhu, a city in sutheast China.

Tp- dwn prcessing is the prcess f using cntext r general knwledge t understand what we perceive （感知）. In 1970, psychlgist Richard Gregry intrduced the cncept. He claimed that perceptin is cnstructive.
The prcessing plays an imprtant rle in ur interactins with ur envirnment. Our five senses are cnstantly taking in infrmatin. At any given time, we are experiencing different sights, sunds, tastes, smells, and ways things feel when we tuch them. If we paid attentin t each ne f ur senses all the time, we’d never d anything else. It enables us t simplify the prcess by relying n cn text and ur preexisting knwledge t understand what we ntice. If ur brains didn’t emply tp- dwn prcessing ur senses wuld verwhelm us.
Tp- dwn prcessing helps us understand what ur senses are perceiving in ur daily lives. Fr example, suppse yu receive an imprtant letter but a few drps f water have ruined part f the text. A few letters in different wrds are nw just smudges（污迹）. Yet, yu’ re still able t read the letter in its entirety using tp- dwn prcessing. If it was a persn the participant liked, cnnecting the infrmatin was easier cmpared t when the infrmatin came frm smene the participant disliked. The participants prvided individual definitins f “like” and “dislike” based n aspects such as plitical views, majrs, eating habits, favrite sprts, hbbies, and music.
The findings can be applied in real life, accrding t the researchers. Ines explained: “Suppse a plitician argues fr raising taxes t benefit healthcare.
