The 17-year-ld started teaching himself Chinese arund five years ag, befre taking distance educatin classes at the start f Year 11. His language ability was als useful in his part-time jb at a lcal Chinese restaurant, where he translated rders fr the cks and custmers.
Nah said he als had a basic knwledge f seven ther languages. It was while teaching himself languages that Nah gt the idea f the translatin tl. “I decided t make my wn app because there weren’t many arund — all the ther apps were full f advertisements (广告) and the translatin feature (功能) wasn’t pwerful enugh,” he said.

Livestreaming (直 播 ) thrugh platfrms such as Amazn Live and TikTk is an increasingly ppular way t sell gds nline. It usually lasts between 5 and 10 minutes, and smene prmtes a prduct. Viewers can then readily buy it by just clicking n a link.
We analyzed ( 分析 ) 99,451 sales cases n a livestream selling platfrm and matched them with actual sales cases. In terms f time, that is equal t ver 2 millin 30-secnd televisin advertisements.
T determine the emtinal ( 情绪的 ) expressin f the salespersn, we used tw deep learning mdels: a face mdel and an emtin mdel. The face mdel discvers the presence r absence f a face in a frame f a vide stream. The emtin mdel then determines the prbability that a face is exhibiting any f the six basic human emtins: happiness, sadness, surprise, anger, fear r disgust. Fr example, smiling signals a high prbability f happiness, while an ff-putting expressin usually pints tward anger.
We wanted t see the effect f emtins expressed at different times in the sales cases s we cunted prbabilities fr each emtin fr all 62 millin frames in ur database. We then cmbined these prbabilities with ther pssible aspects that might drive sales — such as price and prduct characteristics — t judge the effect f emtin.
We fund that, perhaps unsurprisingly, when salespeple shw mre negative emtins — such as anger and disgust — the vlume f sales went dwn. But we als fund that a similar thing happened when the salespeple shw high levels f psitive emtins, such as happiness r surprise.
A likely explanatin, based n ur research, is that smiling can be disgusting because it lacks true feelings and can reduce trust in the seller. A seller’s happiness may be taken as a sign that the seller is gaining interests at the custmer’s expense.
    12. What des Paragraph 1 tell abut livestreaming sales?
    A. It increases the prices f prducts.
    B. It helps sellers save mney n ad.
    C. It makes shpping cnvenient fr buyers.
    D. It prmtes better buyer-seller relatinship.
    13. What des the underlined wrd “ff-putting” in Paragraph 3 prbably mean?
    A. Uneasy.B. Unpleasant.
    C. Lively.D. Strange.
    14. Hw d custmers feel abut the seller’s smiling?
    A. They feel respected.B. They feel satisfied.
    C. They feel cheated.D. They feel trusted.
    15. Which f the fllwing culd be the best title fr the text?
    A. Livestreamers Sell Prducts Successfully
    B. Expressins Influence Online Prduct Sales
    C. Emtins: Means f Cmmunicatin
    D. Smiling: A Way t Increase Sales
