Phnetic (语音的) infrmatin — the smallest sund elements f speech, typically represented by the alphabet (字母) — is cnsidered by many linguists (语音学家) t be the fundatin f language. Infants (婴儿) are thught t learn these small sund elements and add them tgether t make wrds. But a new study suggests that phnetic infrmatin is learnt t late and slwly fr this t be the case. Instead, rhythmic (节奏的) infrmatin helps babies learn language by emphasizing the bundaries f individual wrds and is effective even in the first few mnths f life.
Researchers frm the University f Cambridge and Trinity Cllege Dublin investigated babies’ ability t prcess phnetic infrmatin during their first year. The study fund that phnetic infrmatin wasn't successfully encded (编码) until babies were seven mnths ld, and was still rare fr babies at 11 mnths ld when they began t say their first wrds. A sister study has shwn that rhythmic infrmatin was prcessed by babies at tw mnths ld — and individual differences predicted later language utcmes.
Prfessr Givanni Di Libert said, “This is the first evidence we have f hw brain activity relates t phnetic infrmatin changes ver time in respnse t cntinuus speech.” Previusly, studies have relied n cmparing the respnses t nnsense syllables, like “ bif ” and “ bf ” instead.
“We believe that rhythmic infrmatin is the hidden glue underpinning(巩固) the develpment f a well-functining language system,” said Cambridge neurscientist, Prfessr Gswami. “Infants can use rhythmic infrmatin like a scaffld r skeletn t add phnetic infrmatin n t. Fr example, they might learn that the rhythm pattern f English wrds is typically strng-weak, as in ‘daddy’ r ‘mummy’, with the stress n the first syllable. They can use this rhythm pattern t guess where ne wrd ends and anther begins when listening t natural speech.”
Gswami says that there is a lng histry in trying t explain dyslexia(阅读障碍) and develpmental language disrder in terms f phnetic prblems, but the evidence desn’t add up. She believes that individual differences in children's language riginate with rhythm.
8.What is the key t babies language learning accrding t the new study?
    A. Nnsense syllables. B. Phnetic infrmatin.
    C. Rhythmic infrmatin. D. Parent-kid interactin.

    A. It's better fr parents t use baby talk.
    B. Singing t babies may help them learn a language.

    D. Dyslexia results frm pr respnse t cntinuus speech.
Despite lacking a central brain, jellyfish (水母) learned t spt and avid bstacles in a new study, which is the first evidence that these animals can d smething called assciative learning. “Maybe learning desn’t need a very cmplicated nervus system,” says Jan Bielecki frm Kiel University in Germany. Maybe any creature with even a simple nervus system can learn.
Caribbean bx jellyfish include fur rhpalia (感觉棍) hanging ff a jellyfish’s bdy. Each rhpalium has six “eyes” and has abut 1,000 neurns (神经元) t prcess what thse eyes see. T hunt fd, these jellyfish must mve between trees’ rts. They judge a rt’s distance based n hw dark it lks cmpared t the water. In clear waters, nearby rts have high cntrast. Only distant rts fade int the backgrund. But in dark waters, even nearby rts can blend int their surrundings and have lw cntrast. S the researchers wndered if Caribbean bx jellyfish culd learn that lw-cntrast bjects — which might at first seem distant — were actually clse by.
T find it ut, the team put 12 jellyfish int a rund water tank surrunded by lw-cntrast gray and white stripes (条). Such stripes might appear t a jellyfish like distant rts in the clear water. Initially, the animals seemed t see the gray stripes as distant rt and swam int the tank wall. But thse cllisins seemed t lead the jellyfish t recnsider the tripes. Sn, the creatures knew hw t avid them,
Next the researchers cut rhpalia ff jellyfish and placed them in frnt f a screen that shwed lw-cntrast, light gray bars. Meanwhile, the rhpalia were given a weak electrical pulse. This cpied the nerve (神经) signal rhpalia wuld get if a jellyfish bumped int smething. At first, the rhpalia ignred lw-cntrast bars. But receiving “bump” signals when they saw thse bars made them start paying attentin. Their nerves started sending ut the types f signals they emit when a jellyfish mves away frm smething.
This suggests the rhpalia alne can learn that seemingly distant, lw-cntrast bjects are in fact clse enugh t avid. That, in turn, hints that these nerve centers are behind Caribbean bx jellyfish learning.
12.What is the fcus f the research?
    A. The methd f hw jellyfish learn. B. The thery f assciative learning.
    C. The cmpsitin f a nervus system. D. The special living habit f jellyfish.
    13.Hw d jellyfish judge a rt's distance?
    A. By judging its size. B. By lking at its cntrast.
    C. By cmparing its features.D. By analyzing its surrundings.
14.Hw did the researchers cnduct their research?
    A. They clured smething t attract jellyfish.
    B. They expsed jellyfish t natural surrundings.
    C. They adjusted the distance between bjects.
    D. They created jellyfish’s similar living cnditins.
15.What can rhpalia be described as fr jellyfish?
    A. A driving frce. B. A learning center. C. A special inspiratin. D. A surce f knwledge.
