(2023·海南省直辖县级单位·嘉积中学校考一模)As my head mved up and dwn n the Zm screen, private messages pured in frm my clleagues: “What are yu ding there?” “Are yu sitting n a ball?” “Are yu walking?” I culd feel their eyes n me — inquiring, interested, cnfused. Clearly, this wasn’t a nrmal faculty meeting. I replied I was walking n my new under desk treadmill (跑步机).
I didn’t have t wrry abut wrkday inactivity earlier in my career. As a graduate student and pstdc, I went n frequent field excursins t cllect sil samples in remte places. The fieldwrk was physically challenging, a cntrast t the lab tasks and desk wrk that were als part f my jb. But when I became a prfessr, fieldwrk became a rarity.
During the pandemic the situatin grew wrse. My schedule filled up with ne nline meeting r seminar after the next. And I “traveled” t them withut leaving my desk. Althugh I had the luxury f a height-adjustable desk, which gave me the ptin t stand, I still felt unbalanced, and I began t experience back pain.
At hme, I’d ccasinally tried t wrk n my wife’s treadmill, which I’d repurpsed by putting a wden bard acrss the handles and my laptp n tp. I thught that might be just what I needed in my campus ffice, s I bught a treadmill designed t g under a desk. I decided t spend my entire wrkday n the treadmill. It tk me several days t adjust, but I eventually gt the hang f typing and speaking while walking.
When I’m at my desk, I spend nearly all f my wrking hurs in mtin. In the first cuple f weeks, I was a bit exhausted when I gt hme at night. But ver time, I develped mre endurance. My back pain disappeared and I came t enjy the time at my desk.
Mst f the scientists I wrk with have sent me reassuring feedback. Sme have even bught treadmills f their wn. That has made me view my walking as a way t silently cmmunicate a crucial message t my clleagues: There’re always ways t stay active if yu want!

(2023·湖南郴州·校联考模拟预测)When the Great Backyard Bird Cunt (GBBC) began last Friday, Steve and Janet Kistler f Hart Cunty, Kentucky, jined in. They’ve dne s every year since the nw-glbal traditin began 25 years ag.
Fr Mira Dalibr, wh teaches math at a schl, this was the first cunt. She led a grup f students and parents t an arbretum (植物园) fr an exercise in data-gathering. They were amng hundreds f thusands f peple arund the wrld cunting and recrding ver fur days. Last year, abut 385,000 peple frm 192 cuntries tk part in the GBBC.
This glbal data ges int the eBird database used by scientists fr research n bird ppulatins, which have declined sharply verall in past decades. It’s part f a rise in “citizen science” prjects in which vlunteers cllect data abut the natural wrld fr use by researchers.
Many bird-watchers use eBird year-rund, and it has cllected huge amunts f data — ften between 1 millin and 2 millin bird checklists a mnth frm arund the wrld in the past cuple f years, says Becca Rdmsky-Bish, the prject’s leader at the Crnell Lab f Ornithlgy, in Ithaca, New Yrk. “Observing birds is a gd way t cnnect with the natural wrld. Birds are everywhere. Yu dn’t have t leave yur huse. They will cme. And they’re charismatic because they’re fun and interesting t watch.”
This is hw it wrks: Participants watch birds, whether that means lking ut f the windw fr 15 minutes r taking a lnger trip t a nature area. Organizers recmmend the Merlin bird ID app t distinguish birds by size, shape, sng r ther characteristics. Many participants als carry field guides and binculars (双筒望远镜) alng with their phnes. They then enter the findings int the eBird app. Thse numbers help researchers track the ups and dwns f varius species, which then help determine the directin f cnservatin effrts.
Dalibr prepared her classes with infrmatin abut lcal species and practiced with the Merlin app. The kids recrded bird sightings with pencils and drawing bards, and parent vlunteers entered thse numbers n phnes.

(2023秋·广东河源·高三统考开学考试)Answers may nly feel like they’re n the tip f yur tngue. Smetimes yu knw there’s just the right wrd fr smething, but yur brain can’t find it. That depressing feeling is called the tip-f-the-tngue (TOT) state — and fr decades psychlgists assumed it was caused by a partial recllectin f the answer. But new research suggests this experience may be largely an illusin (错觉). Being sure yu knw smething desn’t mean yu actually d.
In a series f experiments, cllege students attempted t answer 80 general knwledge questins with ne-wrd answers. If they didn’t prvide a crrect answer, they were asked if they felt like the answer was n the tip f their tngue and t prvide partial infrmatin such as its first letter, its number f syllables (音节), r what it sunded like. The team fund that peple in a TOT state were mre likely t vlunteer partial infrmatin — ding s five times as ften in ne experiment.
But that infrmatin tended t be wrng. Guesses at sunds and syllable cunts were n mre likely t be right in a TOT state than therwise. Averaged acrss several experiments, first-letter guesses were nly slightly mre likely t match the crrect answer (rughly 11 versus 8 percent). Yet participants said they thught their guess was crrect 58 percent f the time while in TOT states versus 7 percent therwise.
Previus research has shwn that TOT states are nt cmpletely illusry — peple better recgnize crrect multiple-chice answers fllwing such states (55 versus 42 percent) — but this wrk indicates that we can’t fully trust them. The evidence suggests that instead f partial recllectin leading t a TOT state, a reverse (相反的) prcess may be taking place: Smething causes the feeling, which then mtivates peple t search their memries.
“One pssibility is that peple detect familiarity with the questin itself,” says the study’s senir authr Anne Cleary, a psychlgist at Clrad State University. “It may be signaling: ‘smething relevant is here in memry — let’s d a search.’”
32.What des the new study find abut TOT feeling?
    A.It may be an illusin.
B.It is caused by a partial memry.
C.It is a feeling f failure in giving answers.
D.It is a state f remembering anything with difficulty.
33.What did the cllege students d in the experiments?
    A.They answered 80 multiple-chice questins.
    B.They prvided partial infrmatin n 80 questins.
    C.They answered 80 questins with ne-wrd answers.
D.They guessed the answers accrding t the first letter.
34.What is the mechanism behind the TOT experience accrding t Anne Cleary?
    A.TOT experience is cmpletely illusry.
B.Peple recall partial answers and feel frustrated.
C.Peple’s brn ability helps them t guess the answers.
D.Peple discver smething familiar and search their memries.
35.In which sectin f a newspaper can we prbably find the text?
    A.Entertainment.B.Science.C.Literature.D.Lifestyle.
