Tday’s wrld is nt an easy adjustment fr yung adults. A key skill set fr success is persistence (毅力), a characteristic that researchers say is heavily influenced by fathers. Researchers frm Brigham Yung University discvered that fathers are in a unique psitin t help their adlescent children learn persistence.
BYU prfessrs Laura Padilla-Walker and Randal Day arrived at these findings after fllwing 325 American families ver several years. And ver time, the persistence gained thrugh fathers led t higher achievement in schl.
“There are relatively few studies that stress the unique rle f fathers,” Padilla-Walker said. “This research als helps t prve that characteristics such as persistence — which can be taught — are key t a child’s life success.”
Researchers determined that dads need t practice an “authritative” parenting style. Authritative parenting is nt authritarian: rigid, demanding r cntrlling. Rather, an authritative parenting style includes sme f the fllwing characteristics: children feel warmth and lve frm their father; respnsibility and the reasns behind rules are stressed; children are given an apprpriate level f autnmy (自主权).
In the study, abut 52 percent f the dads exhibited abve-average levels f authritative parenting. A key finding is that ver time, children raised by an authritative father were significantly mre likely t develp persistence, which leads t better utcmes in schl.
This particular study examined 11 t 14-year-lds living in tw-parent hmes. Yet the researchers suggest that single parents still may play a rle in teaching the benefits f persistence, which is an avenue f future research.
27. What is special abut the BYU prfessrs’ study?
A. It centered n fathers’ rle in parenting.
B. It was based n a number f large families.
C. It analyzed different kinds f parenting styles.
D. It aimed t imprve kids’ achievement in schl.
28. What wuld an authritative father d when raising his children?
A. Ignre their demands.B. Make decisins fr them.
C. Cntrl their behavirs.D. Explain the rules t them.
29. Which grup can be a fcus f future studies accrding t the researchers?
A. Single parents.B. Children aged frm 11 t 14.
C. Authritarian fathers.D. Mthers in tw-parent hmes.
30. Which f the fllwing is the best title fr the text?

The article What China Gets Right abut Relatinships by Sam Massie reminds me f the Qura questin abut the pinin n Chinese peple. Obviusly, answers frm different peple wn’t be the same. T me, thse different peple fall int tw grups: thse with a vague picture f China, and thse understanding Chinese culture very well.
It’s quite easy fr the first categry t reach sme cnclusins with prejudice:
“When was child, was taught t be watchful arund Chinese peple-they were the type that smiled when ffended because they’ll stab yu in the back in revenge (报复). They valued mney ver human life, and that was mtive (动机) fr all their activities.” -Qura User.
That prvides us, if I can say s, a racist’s steretype f Chinese peple. It is sad t knw many peple d have an unclear idea abut China-a lng histry, a large ppulatin, the Great Wall, Panda Express, festivals, tea, kngfu mvies, cheap and bad clthes, the manufacturing pwer, a very large internal market, and hardwrking (yes, especially high schl students). All these are rather t simple and general.
By cntrast, t thse we call a China-hand, it is quite bvius that the wrd “Chinese” bears much mre. In tday’s ever glbalized wrld, mre and mre freign friends are increasingly attracted t Chinese culture. They learn Chinese, make Chinese friends, watch Chinese mvies, and pay visits r even mve t China. Understanding the differences between the east and the west, they culd see thrugh the appearance.
In many cases, the first impressin f sme Westerners abut China is n mre than rudeness but it is actually nt that simple. What shuld be paid attentin t are the in-grup/ut-grup effects. Sam Massie is wise in saying that “rudeness t strangers is the flip side (相反面) f deep bnds with lved nes. I am verjyed that he understands the genersity, sincerity and ther gd qualities f Chinese peple. T me, n matter what the Westerners’ pinins are, what really matters is hw we behave and the way we treat thers. What’s yur pinin?

The chief prblem in dealing with freign mtrists is nt s much remembering that they are different frm yu, but that they are largely variable. Crss a frntier(边境) withut adjusting and yu can be in deep truble.
One f the greatest gulfs separating the driving natins is the Atlantic Ocean. Or rather, it is the mental distance between the Eurpean and the American mtrist, particularly the Suth American mtrist. Cmpare, fr example, an English driver at a set f traffic lights with a Brazilian.
Very rarely will an Englishman try t anticipate(预先准备) the green light by mving ff. Yu will find the ccasinal smene wh watches fr the yellw light t cme up n the set f lights. Hwever, he will nt g until he receives the lawful signal. Brazilians view the thing quite differently. If, in fact, they see traffic lights, they regard them as a kind f radside decratin.
The natives f Nrth America are much mre disciplined. They shw this in their addictin t driving in ne lane(车道) and sticking t it—even if it means settling behind sme great truck fr many miles.
T prevent ther drivers frm falling int wrng ways, American mtrists try always t stay clse behind the vehicle in frnt which can make it impssible t make a real lane change. Eurpean visitrs are always falling int this trap. They return t the Old Wrld still waving their arms in disappintment because while driving in the State in their cars they kept failing t get ff the highway when they wanted t and were swept alng t the next city.
Hwever, ne natin abve all thers lives cautiusly by its traffic regulatins — the Swiss. In Switzerland, if yu were simply t anticipate a traffic light, the chances are that the mtrist behind yu wuld take yur number and reprt yu t the plice. There are slight reginal variatins amng the French, German and Italian speaking areas, but it is generally safe t assume that any car bearing a CH sticker will be driven with a high degree f discipline.

The Ntre Dame fire has been put ut, but its spire and a large prtin f its wden rf have been damaged. The terrible destructin causes a sudden sharp pain t peple arund the wrld. On Chinese scial media netwrk Wechat a cmmn cmment n the disaster is: "What a pity that we cannt see the damaged parts f the wnder anymre. "
But the gd news is that there is at least ne way f seeing them, namely via a vide game called Assassin's Creed: Unity. In this game, the player can travel t ne city after anther and enter the buildings exactly like what they are in reality, and see Ntre Dame as it was befre the fire. Further, with virtual reality technlgy, which is already quite mature, ne can even lk arund the undamaged Ntre Dame as if it is still there. Maybe digital technlgy culd help t better prtect architectural cultural heritage.
The idea f digitizing ancient buildings, making digital mdels f them s their data can be saved, dates back t the 1990s and the necessary technlgy has cntinued t advance since then. By scanning the ancient buildings with lasers, building 3D mdels with multiple images,as well as measuring everything precisely, engineers can make a cpy as accurate as the real ne.
As cmputers and smartphnes are hugely ppular, the digital replica(复制品)has great use value. First,it allws turists t feel the cultural relics withut tuching them, which helps prtect them. The virtual tur f Dunhuang Grttes in Gansu Prvince is a gd example f this as turists can view the paintings withut standing near them. Furthermre,it can make the digitized cultural relics mre famus by spreading awareness abut them via the Internet. In 2000,a virtual tur f the Great Wall became very ppular at the Hannver Wrld Exp,which increased the number f freign turists visiting the site in the fllwing years. Abve all,it preserves all the infrmatin f the cultural relics. Even if the riginal nes are damaged ne day, peple can still knw what they were like and can build a replica if desired.
Of curse, hwever precise a mdel is,it is nt the riginal. Time is the biggest threat t a cuntry's architectural heritage, which will always becme ruins with the passing f time. Maybe we will have better technlgies in the future, but the digital technlgy ffers a practical way t preserve architectural cultural heritage at the mment.

We talk cntinuusly abut hw t make children tugher and strnger, but whatever we’re ding, it’s nt wrking. Rates f anxiety disrders and depressin are rising rapidly amng teenagers. What are we ding wrng?
Nassim Taleb invented the wrd “antifragile” and used it t describe a small but very imprtant class f systems that gain frm shcks, challenges, and disrder. The immune (免疫的) system is ne f them: it requires expsure t certain kinds f bacteria and ptential allergens (过敏原) in childhd in rder t develp t its full ability.
Children’s scial and emtinal abilities are as antifragile as their immune systems. If we verprtect kids and keep them “safe” frm unpleasant scial situatins and negative emtins, we deprive (剥夺) them f the challenges and pprtunities fr skill-building they need t grw strng. Such children are likely t suffer mre when expsed later t ther unpleasant but rdinary life events, such as teasing and scial rejectin.
It’s nt the kids’ fault. In the UK, as in the US, parents became much mre fearful in the 1980s and 1990s as cable TV and later the Internet expsed everyne, mre and mre, t thse rare ccurrences f crimes and accidents that nw ccur less and less. Outdr play and independent mbility went dwn; screen time and adult-mnitred activities went up.
Yet free play in which kids wrk ut their wn rules f engagement, take small risks, and learn t master small dangers turns ut t be vital fr the develpment f adult scial and even physical cmpetence. Depriving them f free play prevents their scial-emtinal grwth. Nrwegian play researchers Ellen Sandseter and Leif Kennair warned: “We may bserve an increased anxiety r mental disrders in sciety if children are frbidden frm participating in age-adequate risky play.”
They wrte thse wrds in 2011. Over the fllwing few years, their predictin came true. Kids brn after 1994 are suffering frm much higher rates f anxiety disrders and depressin than did the previus generatin. Besides, there is als a rise in the rate at which teenage girls are admitted t hspital fr deliberately harming themselves.
What can we d t change these trends? Hw can we raise kids strng enugh t handle the rdinary and extrardinary challenges f life? We can’t guarantee that giving primary schl children mre independence tday will bring dwn the rate f teenage suicide tmrrw. The links between childhd verprtectin and teenage mental illness are suggestive but nt clear-cut. Yet there are gd reasns t suspect that by depriving ur naturally antifragile kids f the wide range f experiences they need t becme strng, we are systematically preventing their grwth. We shuld let g—and let them grw.

Janus, the Rman gd, has tw faces lking in ppsite directins. S des artificial intelligence (AI). On ne side are the psitive changes, enabling peple t achieve mre, far mre quickly, by using technlgy t imprve their existing skills. Lk the ther way, thugh, and there are plenty f ptential pitfalls.
Like Janus, technlgical change may als cause disruptin(混乱), but AI is likely t have a bigger impact than anything since the appearance f cmputers, and its cnsequences culd be far mre disruptive.
In the years ahead, AI will raise three big questins fr bsses and gvernments. One is the effect n jbs. Althugh CEOs publicly praise the brad benefits AI will bring, their main interest lies in cutting csts. One Eurpean bank asked Infsys t find a way f reducing the staff in its peratins department frm 50,000 t 500. The McKinsey Glbal Institute estimates that by 2030 up t 375m peple, r 14% f the glbal wrkfrce, culd have their jbs replaced by AI.

AI will ffer even better tls fr businesses t mnitr cnsumers and emplyees, bth nline and in the physical wrld. Cnsumers are smetimes happy t g alng with this if it results in persnalised service r prmtins. But AI is bund t bring invasin f privacy that is seen as unacceptable. Fr example, law-enfrcement fficials arund the wrld will use AI t spt criminals, but may als mnitr rdinary citizens.
The third questin is abut the effect f AI n cmpetitin in business. A technlgy cmpany that achieves a majr breakthrugh in artificial intelligence culd race ahead f rivals, put thers ut f business and lessen cmpetitin. This is unlikely t happen in the near future, but if it did it wuld be f great cncern.
It is t early t tell whether the psitive changes brught by AI will utweigh the risk. But it will put an end t traditinal ways f ding things and start a new era fr business and fr the wrld at large.
