Brn Hedwig Eva Maria Kiesler Nv. 9, 1914, the Austria native tk an early interest in the perfrming arts, but seemed equally fascinated with science and engineering. During her Hllywd years, Lamarr was knwn fr her knwledge n aviatin(航空) design and thery. But it wasn’t until 1942 that Lamarr’s innvative thinking inspired a creative inventin. In cperatin with cmpser Gerge Antheil, Lamarr designed a frequency-hpping(跳频) system that minimized the jamming f radi signals.
During Wrld War II, Hedy’s mther was trapped in Vienna. It was hard fr Hedy t help her mther t get t America because every American ship was getting blwn up by the Nazis. S she wrked n inventing a remte cntrlled trped(鱼雷) s advanced that it wuld be able t hunt dwn and blw up every Nazi submarine in the Atlantic, thus securing safe passage t the US. T make sure the Nazis culdn’t detect the radi signal fr her trped, she created a “secret cmmunicatin system” that culdn’t be detected.
The “secret cmmunicatin system” emplyed changing radi frequencies t prevent enemies frm interpreting messages. Multiple radi frequencies were used t bradcast a radi signal, which changed frequencies in an apparently randm manner. T anyne listening, it wuld just sund like nise. At the start f every wrking week, millins f peple arund the wrld get ready fr smething they d endlessly, jylessly and badly: a meeting.
It was awful befre the pandemic(疫情), when research shwed there were an average f 55 millin meetings daily in the US alne. I fear t think what the figures lk like nw that Cvid-19 and remte wrking have started the age f the cntinuus meeting.
It wuldn’t be a prblem if all meetings did what they were suppsed t d and helped busy peple make gd decisins abut imprtant matters. But the evidence suggests therwise. Studies ver the past 15 years have shwn abut 70 percent f wrkers have rated their meetings pr r unprductive, writes US prfessr, Steven Rgelberg, in his 2019 bk The Surprising Science f Meetings.
“The rt f the rtten meeting is simple,” says Madeleine de Hauke, a meeting cach and teacher. “We spend ur lives in meetings, but there’s very little investment(投入) int helping peple run them effectively,” she tld me last week.
A meeting cach might say that, but I think Ms de Hauke is crrect. Running a meeting well takes skills. At a minimum, peple need t knw in advance why they are meeting; what they are suppsed t achieve; wh really needs t be there and hw they shuld cntribute. Yet meeting leaders are expected t learn all these n the jb.
I thught the pandemic had made things wrse. But Ms de Hauke makes a cnvincing argument that Zm calls merely strengthen what was ging n befre. If a meeting was prductive and cheerful befre, it is prbably better nw. If it was wasteful and annying, it is likely t be wrse.
Still, a bad meeting is like a virus. By failing t prduce gd decisins it ften requires anther meeting t be held, then anther and anther. Luckily, there is n need fr a vaccine(疫苗), just a bit mre care and preparatin, and an understanding that there is n shame in being taught hw t lead a meeting well.
    12. What des the passage fcus n?
    A. Why peple hate meetings.
    B. Hw Cvid-19 affects meetings.
    C. Recmmending experienced meeting caches.
    D. Suggesting develping the skills f meeting running.
    13. Accrding t the authr, what’s the prblem f bad meetings?
    A. Meetings are pr and shrt.
    B. Meetings are dull and fruitless.
    C. Meetings make peple less interested in wrk.
    D. Meetings cause peple t make wrng decisins.
    14. Hw can a meeting leader run a gd meeting?
    A. Invite peple t attend the meeting in advance.
    B. Invest much mney t run meetings successfully.
    C. Set clear gals and make preparatins fr the meeting.
    D. Make everybdy present at the meeting learn sme skills.
    15. Hw des the authr develp the last paragraph?
    A. By cmparisn.B. By classificatin.
    C. By analyzing causes.D. By listing examples.

    【解析】本文是一篇记叙文。文章讲述了海蒂·拉玛发明“秘密通信系统”的原因和系统的运作机理,也讲述了她对通信技术做出了贡献。
4.词句猜测题。根据第三段“T make sure the Nazis culdn’t detect the radi signal fr her trped, she created a “secret cmmunicatin system” that culdn’t be detected.”(为了确保纳粹不能监测到鱼雷的无线电信号,她创造了一个无法被探测到的“秘密通信系统”。)可推断,the jamming f radi signals指的是监测无线电信号。故选A。
