    Jcelyn Bell Burnell
Perhaps the mst famus absent treatment: then student Jcelyn Bell Burnell discvered the first radi pulsars (脉冲星) in 1967, when she was a PhD student at Cambridge. The Nbel Prize that recgnised this great discvery in 1974, hwever, went t her male supervisr, Antny Hewish. The award is cnsidered ne f the mst unfair in the histry f the Nbel Prize, s even sme peple called it “The N Bell Nbel”. Traditinally, rbts have been hard, made f metal and ther hard material. But a team f scientists at Harvard University in the US has managed t build an entirely sft rbt — ne that draws inspiratin (灵感) frm an ctpus (章鱼).
Described in science jurnal Nature, the “Octbt” culd pave the way fr mre effective autnmus rbts that culd be used in the search, rescue and explratin. “The Octbt is a minimal system which may serve as a fundatin fr a new generatin f cmpletely sft, autnmus rbts,” the study's authrs wrte.
Rbts built fr precise, repetitive mvements in a cntrlled envirnment dn't d s well n the rugh grund r in unpredictable cnditins. And they aren't especially safe arund humans because they're made ut f hard and heavy parts that culd be pssibly dangerus t their users.
S researchers have been wrking n building sft rbts fr several ten years. They've taken inspiratin frm nature, lking t animals frm jellyfish t cckraches, which are ften made up f mre sft matter.
But creating a cmpletely sft rbt remains a prblem. Even if engineers build a silicne (硅酮) bdy, it's still a big challenge t make sft versins f essential parts, such as a surce f pwer.
“Althugh sft rbtics is still in its early stage, it hlds great prspects fr several applicatins, such as searches and rescue peratins and explratin”, Barbara Mazzlai and Virgili Mattli f the Italian Institute f Technlgy's Center fr MicrBiRbtics wrte. “Sft rbts might als pen up new ways t imprving wellness and the quality f life.”
24.What's the special feature f the Octbt?

Mre and mre peple arund the wrld are living in city areas and the need fr highquality fresh fd is rising. At the same time, new hmes, apartment buildings, shpping centers and rads are taking the place f rich land near cities. That makes grwing crps in tall buildings an interesting slutin.
In Dallas, Texas, a cmpany called Green Habitat Hydrpnics (GHH) sells vertical farming supplies. “Yu can cntrl anything and everything yu want t with hydrpnics — the prcess f grwing plants in sand, small stnes r water with added nutrients (营养物) but nt sil,” Kris Maxwell, a sales emplyee at GHH said. “Fr example, certain plants need certain nutrients and pH levels. But dn't wrry. Yu can change the hydrpnics slutins (溶液) by adding r taking away nutrients, r by changing the PH level, r even by cntrlling the amunt f water in a slutin, s that plants get all the nutrients and water requirements they need. There are even different slutins fr certain stages in the plants' grwth.”
In this indr envirnment, LED lights, which are envirnmentally friendly, replace the sun. Heaters, clers, special machines cntrl the temperature and humidity (湿度). Up t 300 plants can grw in ne cntainer unit.
GHH als sells aerpnic systems. With this system, plants are placed in huge cntainers where nly the rts are put in a slutin. Nutrientrich wastes frm fish, fr example, are filtered and sent thrugh the system.
The gd thing abut this methd is that n fertilizers have t be used because the fish prduce all f the necessary nutrients. Anther advantage f vertical farming is that n pests will damage yur crps.
What d yu think? Des vertical farming have a bright future?

Yu carry 1.3 kg fatty material in yur head that cntrls everything yu will ever d. This fantastic cntrl center lets yu think, learn, create, and feel emtins. It als cntrls everything yur bdy des. What is this amazing machine? It's yur brain — a structure s amazing that the famus scientist James Watsn called it “the mst cmplex thing we have yet discvered in ur universe”.

N cmputer can match yur brain's great ability t dwnlad, prcess, and react t the fld f infrmatin frm yur eyes, ears and ther sensry rgans.
If a bee lands n yur ft, sensry neurns (感觉神经元) in yur skin send this infrmatin t yur brain at a speed f mre than 240 kilmeters per hur. Yur brain then uses mtr neurns (运动神经元) t send a message back t yur ft: Shake the bee ff quickly! Mtr neurns can send this infrmatin at mre than 320 kilmeters per hur!
Yur brain has abut 100 billin tiny cells: neurns — it wuld take yu mre than 3,000 years if yu tried t cunt them all. Whenever yu dream, laugh, think, see r mve, tiny chemical and electrical signals are racing between these neurns alng billins f tiny neurn pathways. Believe it r nt, the activity in yur brain never stps. Cuntless messages fly arund inside it every secnd, like a superfast game f table tennis. Yur neurns create and send mre messages than all the phnes in the entire wrld. And althugh a single neurn prduces nly a tiny amunt f electricity, all yur neurns tgether can prduce enugh electricity t pwer a light bulb.

D.Yur brains can use neurns t send messages back faster than bees'.
    34.The authr mentins “t pwer a light bulb” in Para. 4 t shw ________.
A.neurns can create lts f messages
B.hw many active tiny cells the brain have
C.hw much electricity the brain can prduce
D.there is cuntless infrmatin in the brain
35.What is the main idea f the passage?
A.The pwerful brain is a wnderful machine.
B.Brains wrk well in cntrlling bdy mvements.
C.The brain is the mst cmplex structure in the universe.
D.Human brains are made up f numerus neurns.
