Chuquicamata, my hst cmmunity, is a mining camp in the Atacama Desert. There is n dance hall, n shpping centre, n museum r beach. Driveways must be watered daily t keep the dust dwn.
When I arrived there, I was scared. It was s different frm the urban middle-class America I was used t. There were lst dgs n the streets, and a cnstant clud f brick-clured dust came frm the mine. There was n dwntwn, few flat streets, and little t d fr amusement. The peple wrked extremely hard. Rain was a rare phenmenn; earthquakes and windstrms were frequent.
I had studied Spanish fr tw and a half years and was always ne f the best students in my class. But in my first week in Chile I was nly able t cmmunicate and needed ne persn t whm I culd explain my shck. I culdn't speak the thughts in my head—and there were s many.
Mst exchange students experience this like me. Culture shck presents itself in everything. I was required t vercme all difficulties. Being an exchange student is nt easy.
As time passed, everything changed. I began t frget wrds in English and t dream in Spanish and lve Chilean fd. I gt used t nt depending n expensive things fr fun. Fun in Chuquicamata was being with peple. And I tk maths, physics, chemistry, bilgy, Spanish, art and philsphy.
But the difficulties were nthing cmpared t the gain. I learned hw t accept as well as t succeed in anther culture. I nw knw the wrld is my cmmunity and have a much deeper understanding f bth myself and thers.
