Packaging designers ften cmbine a variety f elements—text, illustratin, clr—in cmplex designs meant t attract cnsumers’ attentin. In many cases, accrding t a new series f studies, they’d get better results frm a simpler apprach.

They gathered all prduct images acrss fur cnsumable categries—shamp, dedrant, crackers, and cereal—alng with each prduct’s name, brand, retail (零售) price, and weight. Independent research assistants rated the images n cmplexity f design. Mapping the ratings against each prduct’s price per unce shwed that the simpler the package was, the higher the prduct’s unit price—suggesting that peple are willing t pay mre when items are presented simply.
In the fllwing experiments, the researchers created simple and cmplex packages fr trail mix and shwed ne r the ther t each f 362 university students. The students indicated the highest amunt they wuld pay fr the snack, reprted whether they thught it cntained few r many ingredients and hw pure they believed it t be, and rated the package n attractiveness and simplicity. Thse wh saw the simple design were willing t pay mre, even thugh they were less likely than peple wh saw the cmplex design t award high marks n attractiveness. The simple design gt higher scres n purity, and participants believed the prduct cntained fewer ingredients. Repeating the experiment with a different item—hand ltin (护手霜)—gt similar results.
“Simplifying packaging design may be an efficient way t cnvey prduct infrmatin independent f text,” the researchers write. Additinal experiments shwed that the bst frm a simple design was less prnunced when the prduct’s ingredients were highlighted n the package; cnsumers then had n need t guess purity.

By talking t the staff frm a supermarket.
By recrding pinins frm lcal custmers.
By rating cmplexity f designs and imprving them.
By analyzing prduct images and related infrmatin.
The researchers repeated the experiment with hand ltin t find ut ________.
hw t create simple packages.

whether peple preferred simpler designs.
why cmplex designs were mre attractive.

The cmpany has made public their wn nutrient analysis, evaluated by the Fd and Drug Administratin, which reveals that the nutritinal prfiles f their prducts are almst identical t cnventinal meats .
By alleviating the raising and killing f animals, cultured meat cmpanies say their prduct helps reduce animal cruelty and will be better fr the envirnment. Their prcess uses far less land because there’s n need t huse animals r grw their feed. Cultured beef, especially, culd reduce the number f cattle n farms—a significant surce f methane emissins. Hwever, sme studies cntradicted that cultured meat may als require greater energy usage than cnventinal prductin. Much f the envirnmental impact will depend n whether the energy used is renewable and n the efficiency f future prductin technlgy.
