展开On February 15, 1910, Irena Krzyzanwska was brn in Warsaw, Pland. Irena studied Plish literature at Warsaw University, and eventually jined the Plish Scialist Party.
Then Wrld War II brke ut. It was 1940 and Germany had taken ver. The Germans had begun shifting Warsaw’s ppulatin f 380,000 Jews t a separate Ghett (聚居区). Irena wrked in the Warsaw health department and was allwed t enter the Ghett.
Irena was a member f Zegta (援助犹太人委员会), a secret rganizatin set up by the Plish gvernment. The gal f Zegta was t rescue Plish Jews. Irena’s jb was t rescue as many children as she culd.
Regardless f the danger it psed, Irena began aiding Jews in earnest (真挚地) in the early 1940s. She and her sympathetic c-wrkers created mre than 3,000 false dcuments t help Jewish families, and that was just the beginning f the effrts.
Irena and her team began smuggling children ut during these visits. They used varius methds, such as hiding them in ambulances, leading them thrugh sewer pipes r undergrund passages, even stuffing them int suitcases r bxes that they’d then take thrugh the curtyard t the nn-Jewish area.
Irena was helped by a netwrk f ver 30 vlunteers, mst f whm were wmen. Their hpe was t get the children back t their families nce the war was wn. Irena and her helpers nted the names f the children n cigarette papers and sealed them in glass bttles. Then they buried the bttles in a friend’s garden fr safekeeping. When the war was dne, the bttles were dug up and the lists handed t Jewish representatives. Sadly, reuniting the children with their parents prved mstly impssible, as almst all had been killed in cncentratin camps.

The spaces left empty in Barbra’s childhd are filled with memries shared with her frm lives fading away in the dusk. Fr 30 years, she has been making peple feel gd at a time when mst wuld just be waiting t die, alne and unnticed. When seeing their faces when they are with Barbara, yu’d think the last years were the best.
