Scientists in Suth Africa have fund that ceramic (瓷的) nest bxes can prtect endangered African penguins frm climate change.
In the past, the penguins laid eggs in hles dug int centuries-ld layers f their wn drppings, mst f which was shipped by traders t the United Kingdm as fertilizer (肥料) in the 1800s. Since then, many penguins have nested in the pen, expsing their eggs and themselves t the burning heat.
Because penguins evlved t keep heat in cld water, they can easily verheat n land. Typically, penguins leave their nests regularly t cl ff in the sea. But withut prper hles, this leaves their eggs unprtected. Since 1900, the African penguin ppulatin has drpped frm three millin t nly 48,000.
Frtunately, a team f researchers seem t have fund a way. Over the past years, the team has put mre than 1,500 handmade ceramic nest bxes in five areas where the penguins live, including Bird Island in Alga Bay, Suth Africa, which is hme t nearly half f the wrld’s remaining African penguins. Lking like small rund huses, the duble-walled ceramic nests can keep African penguins cl.
“The nests are s useful,” says Welman, a zlgist, “Even if adults had t leave nests fr sme reasn, their eggs wuld never be at any risk f verheating.” Christina Hagen f Bird Life Suth Africa, wh was nt part f the study, says finding effective cnservatin slutins is imprtant given the decreasing ppulatin f African penguins.
The main threat t African penguins is verfishing f anchvy and sardines, the penguins’ favrite fd. Scientists and cnservatinists are pushing the Suth African gvernment t clse cmmercial fishing arund the five African penguin breeding (繁殖) clnies until ppulatins recver. But withut prtectin frm rising temperatures, thse effrts alne may nt be enugh. Ceramic nests culd help t give these belved penguins a fighting chance.

I have quite a bit f experience with Tastmasters, an rganizatin aiming t help peple vercme speech anxiety. I jined many years ag with the hpe f imprving my public speaking. After ne f my speeches, the cmments I received were harsh. Cnstructive r nt, the critique was hard t take. I felt my feelings were hurt.
I learned many things frm my time with Tastmasters, and ne was the value f gd feedback. Welcming the critique f thers is hard fr adults, even when it’s well-intentined. S naturally, we can expect that children will als struggle with it. But the feedback ur children receive frm teachers and parents is imprtant t their grwth and develpment. S as parents, we must learn hw t deliver ur feedback effectively, and we’ll need t train ur children n hw t accept it with penness and wisdm.
The way parents deliver their feedback is as imprtant as the specific wrds used. It’s pssible t have gd intentins, but when feedback is prly given, it can be harmful and nt helpful.
It’s imprtant t create a welcming, safe envirnment in the hme fr intaking and prcessing feedback. Especially between a child and parent, the feedback needs t be healthy, cnstructive and regular.
The wrds used are als imprtant. In a New Yrk Times article written by Dr. Adam Grant, an rganizatinal psychlgist at the Whartn Schl, he shares that it is “22 t 29 percent mre effective” t encurage children with nuns than verbs, but when it cmes t giving negative feedback, it’s generally better t use verbs.
A parent’s feedback prvides the scafflding (脚手架) fr hw a child will manage their inner mnlgue. Cnsider, as an example, a discussin yu may have with yur child abut their gals. Yur feedback can encurage them nt just t fcus n where they are nw but t reflect n hw far they’ve cme. This kind f feedback can spur them n t reach the finish line.
32. Why des the authr mentin his experience with Tastmasters?
A. T tell us what is gd feedback.B. T tell us t jin Tastmasters.
C. T shw the main functin f feedback.D. T shw the necessity f prper feedback.
33. Which f the fllwing feedback is effective accrding t Dr. Adam Grant?
① Yu’re a big helper.② Yu’re a pr math learner.
③ Yu’ve been helpful this afternn.④ Yu didn’t d well n this math test.
A. ①②B. ①④C. ②③D. ③④
34. What des the underlined wrd “spur” in the last paragraph mean?
A. Limit.B. Mnitr.C. Persuade.D. Inspire.
35. Which can be the best title fr the passage?
A. The way t respnd t feedbackB. The value f accepting feedback
C. Hw t give effective feedbackD. Hw t becme a better speaker
