    A prfessr in music and music educatin at the University f NSW, Rbert Walker, argues that all students shuld study the wrks f Western classical cmpsers such as Haydn and Tchaikvsky.
    Prfessr Walker says students are missing ut n an imprtant part f the cultural heritage because they fail t study classical music, as the little music that children learn at schl is mainly pp. The lack f music teaching is serius, especially in gvernment schls where there are nt enugh specialist music teachers.
    A natinal review made 15 suggestins, but Prfessr Walker said it still failed t deal with the lack f classical music taught in schls.
    “I'm nt against pp music, but it's very simple, and nt difficult either t play r t sing,” Prfessr Walker says. “But classical music is challenging and althugh it is part f Australia's cultural heritage, mst children learn it nly thrugh Hllywd films.”
    “At least children ught t knw what's happening in Western culture. It's part f the cultural heritage,” he says. “Asian students knw mre abut Western classical music than mst children in the West.”
    Prfessr Walker has taught music and music teachers in Britain, Canada and Australia and is a frmer chief examiner fr the Internatinal Baccalaureate and a frmer chairman f the research cmmittee f the Internatinal Sciety fr Music Educatin. Prfessr Walker says n schl curriculum(课程) in Australia lists a piece f music that children shuld study, such as the Mendelsshn's.
