In Flrida’s Everglades, few species are mre clsely tied t this place’s health than an endangered bird, the snail kite, which eats just ne thing: snails. Over the last century, due t changing envirnments, these lcal snails have becme hard t find, and the birds are dying ut. But the number f snail kites has increased recently thanks t an unusual invasive (入侵的) snail, which is a pretty uncmmn event.
Snail kites gt their name frm their amazing flying ability. They were ne f the last bird species discvered in the U. S. because f where they live, ften hidden in the Everglades. Over the past century, as many f their living places became pretty dry and water stpped running thrugh parts f the Everglades, the snail kite ppulatin fell rapidly. It was ne f the first birds put n the endangered species list in the 1960s. And by 2007, fewer than 800 had remained.
Right shrtly after that, this invasive snail came in, and just started flurishing and getting int every wetland. Since then, the snail kite ppulatin has been slwly increasing. By last year’s cunt, there are nw mre than 3,000 snail kites. And, althugh it’s early in the seasn, researchers are finding lts f nests with eggs and yung birds.
Effrts t restre (恢复) Flrida’s Everglades have als helped the snail kite, bringing back lcal plants and the flw f water. The restratin wrk has been in place fr mre than 30 years with a cst f mre than $20 billin. But prgress is slw.
Thugh sme scientists say the invasive snail may have saved the snail kite, Prfessr Rbert Fletcher is feeling uneasy abut the pssible influence the species will have n the Everglades ver the lng term. He says, “What we shuld be thinking abut is hw t restre lcal snails t get thse benefits rather than depending n this invasive species that can harm the ecsystem. The snails may already have a bad effect n sme lcal plants, and a sign truble may be shwing sn.”
    28. What des the uncmmn event in the first paragraph refer t?

Fish farming is the fastest-grwing frm f fd prductin wrldwide. Seafd accunts fr arund 17% f the wrld’s prtein intake. It’s estimated that glbal cnsumptin f fish will reach 180m tnnes by the end f the decade. The Wrld Bank thinks that 90% f the wrld’s fisheries are being fished ver their capacity. Aquaculture (水产养殖) has therefre accunted fr nearly all the grwth in fish cnsumptin since 1990. It’ll accunt fr almst all the grwth t cme, t.
As with farming n land thugh, aquaculture has sme prblems. Many farmed fish are grwn in net pens (网栏) either in rivers r the pen cean. Uneaten fd and fish waste can pllute surrunding waters. When net pens break, escaped farmed fish can damage the lcal ecsystem. Inland “flw-thrugh” farms require cntinuus streams f fresh water frm rivers, cmpeting with thse wh might need t drink it.
Therefre, newer fish farms, like Salten Smlt, came int being. They adpt a technlgy called RAS (recirculating aquaculture systems). Rather than relying n a cnstant flw f water t keep fish healthy, a RAS farm grws fish n land in tanks whse water is cntinuusly cleaned and recycled. Standard salmn farming cnsumes abut 50,000 litres f water fr each kilgram f salmn prduced. A RAS farm might need just 150 litres. Besides, it takes better care f the fish, and allws picky species t be raised anywhere. Hwever, the pipes, pumps and mnitring systems mean that csts are higher. And these systems need t be mnitred regularly by skilled persnnel in case f a lss.
The RAS tanks are climate-cntrlled tanks, which can prvide ideal temperature, withut the need t wrry abut terrible weather. Reel Data, a cmpany in Nva Sctia, uses data frm cameras and sensrs in tanks t estimate hw hungry fish are, hw much they weigh and even hw stressed they are. The firm says the technlgy can raise its prductivity by up t 20%.
Fr nw, the RAS farm remains small fry (鱼苗) Just as Kathrin Steinberg, head f research at the Aquaculture Stewardship Cuncil, said, less than 5% f the farms certified by her rganizatin make use f it. But with the wrld’s demand fr fish rising rapidly, she believes that market share will definitely grw sn.
    32. What des the authr highlight in Paragraph 1?
    A. The benefit f cnsuming seafd.
    B. The rapid develpment f fisheries.
    C. The difficulty f increasing fd prductin.
    D. The significance f develping aquaculture.
    33. What can we infer abut present fishing farms?
    A. They may bring abut a waste f land.
    B. They may lead t declined fish diversity.
    C. They may cause envirnmental cncerns.
    D. They may struggle t meet lcal demand.
    34. Which f the fllwing are the advantages f the RAS farm?
①expense-saving ②water efficient ③flexible site selectin ④fewer disease utbreaks
    ⑤highly prductive ⑥cmplete aut-mnitring system

    D. We will witness a great refrm in fd prductin
