During 20 years f stacking (码放) shelves with gds at his family’s supermarket in Pllenca n the Spanish island f Mallrca, Jse Luis-Reig, knwn as Pep, never gave a thught t the academic wrld. It was nly when visiting the classrms and passages f mainland universities with his tw teenage daughters that he suddenly felt himself at hme amng the bks and atmsphere f learning.
After schl Pep had intended t d a degree in bilgy at Barcelna University but had been called n t help run the family business instead.
But the questin f “What’s my rle in life?“ still kept cming back t him. It wasn’t until a year later that the answer suddenly struck him. When he was at schl, ther children wuld cme t him with their prblems. He develped a reputatin and s was invited nt lcal radi, where the interviewer said, “Yu’re like a yung psychlgist.”
Pep was n stranger t change. The family business had riginally been a sawmill (锯木厂), but when Pep, then 27, was asked if he wanted t take ver, he decided t transfrm the mill int the twn’s first supermarket.
One day in the shp, what the radi presenter said came back t him. After running the idea past his family, he applied t university in Palma t study psychlgy and, aged 46, was accepted.
“I had t get used t being much lder than all the ther students,” he says.“ In fact, I was lder than my prfessr. But I believe disadvantages can always be advantages. And I ended up helping the thers because I’d had mre life experience that carries psychlgical impact, which culd reflect classrm thery.

Assistive tech is playing a big rle in the transfrmatin. The glbal value f the industry is expected t increase frm $14 billin in 2015 t $30.8 billin in 2024, accrding t Zin Market Research.
One f the things that culd transfrm lives is a smart walking stick designed by engineers frm Yung Guru Academy (YGA) in Turkey. The WeWalk stick has a sensr that detects hurdles abve chest level and uses vibratins (振动) t warn the user. It can be paired with a smartphne t help navigatin, and is cnnected with a vice assistant and Ggle Maps.
Ceylan, wh has been blind since birth, says that cnnecting the stick t the Internet f Things and smart city slutins makes it user-friendly. “As a blind persn, when I am at the Metr statin I dn’t knw which is my exit ... I dn’t knw which bus is appraching ... which stres are arund me. That kind f infrmatin can be prvided with the WeWalk,” he says.
“The smart walking stick is really an exciting initiative that will make a huge difference t sme peple,” says Anna Lawsn, the directr f the Center fr Disability Studies at Leeds University in the United Kingdm. “But they are very expensive ... they’re nt ging t be available t the vast majrity f disabled peple,” she added.
Bryan Matthews, a lecturer at the Institute fr Transprt Studies at the University f Leeds, shares the cncerns abut cst. He says there shuld als be a fcus n inclusive design, and anything that helps peple navigate their envirnment is psitive.

Fr the study, Knrath and clleagues analyzed data cllected in 2008 and 2012 aiming at the same randm samples f 3,376 peple. Overall, they fund that just 2.3 percent f thse wh nce wrked as vlunteers had died, cmpared t 4.3 percent f nn-vlunteers. They further fund that hw much peple vlunteered mattered as well—nly 1.8 percent f regular vlunteers died, cmpared with 2.5 percent f ccasinal vlunteers.
But what really made a difference were peple’s mtives fr vlunteering. The researchers asked peple t rate hw imprtant they fund varius reasns fr vlunteering, and they fund that the mre imprtant peple rated reasns such as feeling pity fr peple in need, the mre likely they were t be alive. Thse wh rated mtives related t persnal benefit as mre imprtant were mre likely t have died, and just as likely t die as thse wh didn’t vlunteer at all. These reasns included vlunteering because they enjyed the scial cntact, t escape their wn prblems, r t explre their wn strengths.
Knrath says the current findings suggest it may be a pr idea t encurage peple t vlunteer because it’s gd fr them. “Vlunteering is increasingly being encuraged in schls and rganizatins. Sme grups say that it’s kay t want benefits fr yurself, and encurage peple t think f vlunteering as an exchange fr persnal interests. Sme grups emphasize the health benefits received thrugh vlunteering.” Knrath added, “Of curse, it’s reasnable fr vlunteers t expect benefits fr themselves. But the ptential health benefits f vlunteering are significantly reduced if self-benefit becmes a persn’s main mtive.”
