In Australia, mice reprduce quickly and becme a serius prblem fr farmers. Luckily, a new published study suggests a slutin — camuflaging(伪装) wheat seeds, which can reduce seed lss by mre than 70 percent.
When farmers plant wheat, mice g dwn the rws, smelling ut the seeds and digging them up. Usually, farmers with their fields verrun with mice turn t pisn that can change t a harmful gas in a muse’s stmach. Unfrtunately, it’s hard t make any pisn attractive enugh t make mice frget the wheat seeds. And farmers have t use mre and mre f it, which leads t cncerns in every aspect.
What if the mice culdn’t smell ut the seeds at all? “We thught, if we put thse smells everywhere, hw can they then find ut where the seeds actually are?” says Banks, a behaviral eclgist wrking n smell camuflage. “Seeing the muse hles in the fields, I thught that they’re finding thse seeds by smell. S can we use the same idea in that system?”
Befre swing(播种) seeds, the scientists sprayed(喷洒) w heat il in experimental areas. The smell f the il is “what the mice are using t find the seeds”. They fund the areas that had been sprayed with the il had 74 percent fewer muse hles. When sme areas gt the il, the mice were cming and they were just finding nthing. When the seeds went int the grund, the mice may have already learned nt t dig that area.
Hwever, it’s anther thing t put this methd int practice. The test was dne n a 27 - hectare field, but Australian farmers typically wrk with much larger areas, arund 6,000 hectares. Finding a practical way t apply the wheat il during planting, due t the varius tasks farmers already face, becmes an imprtant cnsideratin.
“And the camuflage prbably wn’t be enugh n its wn,” says eclgist Steve Henry, wh didn’t take part in the study. “Sme traditinal ways are als necessary. I dn’t see it as a replacing methd, but rather regard it as an additinal tl that will really help.”

B. Hw Australian farmers wrk with large areas.
C. Varius tasks Australian farmers have.
