When the teacher intrduced the curse,I realized my mistake. The credits(学分)I earned frm the curse wuldn't cunt tward my majr. By the end f the sessin, hwever, I decided that I had t be a part f the curse. Perhaps, as a lifelng reader, I was eager t understand hw stries wrked their magic.
But taking the class wuld be impssible: I wasn't even n the waitlist. That's when the teacher asked fr a vlunteer t submit the first wrkshp stry.
Silence blanketed the rm. N ne risked eye cntact. Whever vlunteered wuld have t write a whale stry in a week. Perhaps they, like me, had never writtencne befre.
Seizing my chance, I raised my hand and asked, “If I g first, will yu give me a spt in the class?” He said he wuld.
S, instead f keeping my head dwn and aviding eye cntact, I did the ppsite.
Years later, I'd cmpleted a degree in creative writing and was wrking n a nvel when a literary agent(经纪人) asked t read the first 50 pages f my draft. But I wasn't cmfrtable shwing her anything; the nvel was far frm dne.
Thrughut graduate schl, I'd been advised many times nt t cntact agents until I have a cmplete draft. In the meanwhile, I knew the beginning f my stry was attractive and that the agent might nt remember me after a year.
S, nce again, instead f keeping my head dwn and aviding eye cntact, I did the ppsite. I sent her the first three chapters. A mnth later, she signed me n the strength f thse chapters alne. She has since seen me thrugh the publicatin(出版)f three nvels.
Determinatin, fcus, perseverance-the qualities that I cnsider crucial in getting me int Stanfrd n dubt helped me becme the nvelist I am tday. And yet if I'd trained my gaze nly n the path ahead, I wuld have missed s many happy accidents, s many beautiful pprtunities t lkup, raise my hand, and say yes.

I have quite a bit f experience with Tastmasters, an rganizatin aiming t help peple vercme speech anxiety. I jined many years ag with the hpe f imprving my public speaking. After ne f my speeches, the cmments I received were harsh. Cnstructive r nt, the critique was hard t take. I felt my feelings were hurt.
I learned many things frm my time-with Tastmasters, and ne was the value f gd feedback(反馈).Welcming the critique f thers is hard fr adults, even when it's well-intentined. S naturally, we can expect that children will als struggle with it. But the feedback ur children receive frm teachers and parents is imprtant t their grwth and develpment. S as parents, we must learn hw t deliver ur feedback effectively, and we'll need t train ur children n hw t accept it with penness and wisdm.
The way parents deliver their feedback is as imprtant as the specific wrds used. It's pssible t have gd intentins, but when feedback is prly given, it can be harmful and nt helpful.
It's imprtant t create a welcming, safe envirnment in the hme fr intaking and prcessing feedback. Especially between a child and parent, the feedback needs t be healthy, cnstructive and regular.
The wrds used are als imprtant. In a New Yrk Times article written by Dr. Adam Grant, an rganizatinal psychlgist at the Whartn Schl, he shares that it is "22 t 29 percent mre effective” t encurage children with nuns than verbs, but when it cmes t giving negative feedback, it's generally better t use verbs.
A parent 's feedback prvides the scafflding(脚手架)fr hw a child will manage their inner mnlgue. Cnsider, as an example, a discussin yu may have with yur child abut their gals. Yur feedback can encurage them nt just t fcus n where they are nw but t reflect n hw far they've cme. This kind f feedback can spur them n t reach the finish line.
    28. Why des the authr mentin his experience with Tastmasters?
    A. T tell us what is gd feedback.B. T tell us t jin Tastmasters.
    C. T shw the main functin f feedback.D. T shw the necessity f prper feedback.
    29. Which f the fllwing feedback is ettective accrding t Dr. Adam Grant?
    ① Yu're a big helper.② Yu're a pr math learner.
    ③ Yu've been helpful this afternn.④ Yu didn't d well n this math test.
    A.①②B. ①④C. ②③D. ③④
    30. What des the underlined wrd “spur” in the last paragraph mean?
    A. Limit.B. Inspire.C. Persuade.D. Mnitr.
    31. Which can be the best title fr the passage?
    A. The way t respnd t feedbackB. The value f accepting feedback
    C. Hw t give effective feedbackD. Hw t becme a better speaker
    D
A large bdy f research has been develped in recent years t explain many aspects f willpwer(意志力).Mst f the researchers explring self-cntrl d s with an bvius gal in mind: Hw can willpwer be strengthened? If willpwer is truly a limited resurce, as the research suggests, what can be dne t make it stay strng?
Aviding temptmmn(诱惑)is an effective methd fr maintaining self-cntrl, which is called the" ut f sight, ut f mind" principle. One recent study, fr instance, fund ffice wrkers less attracted t canay in the desk drawer than that n tp f their desks, in plain sight.
The research suggesting that we pssess a limited reservir(储备)f self-cntrl raises a trubling questin. When we face t many temptatins, are we t fail? Nt necessarily. Researchers dn't believe that ne 's willpwer is ever cmpletely exhausted(耗尽). Rather, peple appear t hld sme willpwer in reserve, saved fr future demands. The right mtivatin allws us t tap int thse reserves, allwing us t carry n even when ur self-cntrl strength has been run dwn. High mtivatin might help vercme weakened willpwer-at least t a pint.
Willpwer may als be made less vulnerable(脆弱)t being exhausted in the first place. Researchers wh study self-cntrl ften describe it as being like a muscle that gets tired with heavy use. But there is anther aspect t the muscle(肌肉) cmparisn, they say. While muscles becme exhausted by exercise in the shrt term, they are strengthened by regular exercise in the lng term. Similarly, regular practices f self-cntrl may imprve willpwer strength.
The evidence frm willpwer-exhaustin studies als suggests that making a list f reslutins n New Year's Eve is the wrst pssible apprach. Being exhausted in ne area can reduce willpwer in ther areas, s it makes mre sense t fcus n a single gal at a time. In ther wrds, dn't try t quit smking, adpt a healthy diet and start a new exercise plan at the same time. Taking gals ne by ne is a better apprach. Once a gd habit is in place, Baumeister says, yu'll n lnger need t draw n yur willpwer t maintain the behavir. Eventually healthy habits will becme rutine, and wn't require making decisins at all.
    32. Frm the studies in the passage we learn that .
    A. peple have unlimited self-cntrl
    B. high mtivatin ensures ne's success
    C. willpwer is hardly cmpletely exhausted
    D. t many temptatins ften lead t farhre
    33. The underlined phrase "tap int” in Paragraph 3 mst prbably means .
    A. make use fB. run ut fC. buildD. increase
    34. The authr cmpares self-cntrl t muscles .
    A.t prve the lng-term effect f willpwer
    B. t shw the significance f regular exercise
    C. t argue that self-cntrl can he easily used up
    D. t explain the benefits f practicing self-cntrl
    35. T develp a gd habit, which f the fllwing des the authr prefer?
    A. “I will give up dessert and d exercise."
    B. “I will set thee gals this new semester.”
    C. “I will read an English nvel every mnth.”
    D. “I will keep myself frm any remptatin.”
