Befre arriving in China, I had read varius bks relating t China, and my fascinatin were increasing.
Therefre, when I arrived, I culdn’t have been mre excited t be living in this huge histrically and culturally rich cuntry. The fd, the landmarks, the big cities and everyday life — I culdn’t wait t explre.
Yet despite my passin, learning Chinese hadn’t even entered my mind. This wasn’t laziness, but rather fear at the thught f trying t learn what is regarded as the mst difficult language in the wrld. Besides this, I was living in Shanghai, an internatinal city, with many peple speaking English as a secnd language — I decided English wuld be enugh.
Hwever, after a year in China I began t bserve that while many freigners did nt speak Chinese, there were plenty wh did. Perhaps it was achievable after all? In additin, I felt uncmfrtable with hw many Chinese peple culd speak English and yet I culdn’t even speak the mst basic Chinese. With these factrs in mind and a thirst fr a new challenge, I decided t begin my language jurney and my nly regret is that I didn’t start earlier.
Learning t speak Chinese isn’t as insurmuntable as I nce thught. When I speak t native Chinese speakers in Chinese, they almst always understand me, I have als nt fund it t difficult t remember characters and I am nw even able t write ver 400 characters. The thing I find mst challenging is listening since native speakers talk at such a speed. I can’t always understand what’s been said.
My biggest takeaway frm learning Chinese is that it’s nt nly achievable but can als be enjyable. Learning Chinese nt nly helped me in day-t-day life, but deepened my cultural understanding f such a fascinating cuntry. S, t all my nn-Chinese friends I say this, take up the challenge and take the leap f faith.

These students wandering thrugh the wds n the utskirts (郊区) f Prtland, Oregn, aren’t n a schl field trip — this muddy field is their schl. Frm the mment they’re drpped ff in the mrning, they spend their entire day utside in ne f Oregn’s public parks. “Rain r shine, we’re ut here,” said teacher Christine Fleener.
On this surprisingly nice day, Fleener’s class f fifth graders headed t the grassland fr a bilgy lessn. Further dwn the trail, a grup f furth graders is learning n lgs. It’s schl, just nt the type f schl yu might be used t. “Frest schl is where the classrm des nt have walls,” said Tny Deis, ne f the funders f Trackers Earth Frest Schl. “It’s hw kids riginally learned; they didn’t learn sitting at desks, facing frward, and lking at a teacher. They learned frm a multi-sensry envirnment.”
Over the past decade, utdr frest schls have gained ppularity in the United States. The idea is that the challenges that cme with being utside all day — dealing with weather, building yur wn shelter, and unearthing the unexpected are all part f the learning prcess.
It’s cmplicated, f curse. Outdr schling invlves a puzzle f weather and regulatins and budget issues. A well-funded private schl in Prtland, Oregn is ne thing, but what abut a public schl in Prtland, Maine? Surprisingly, cld Maine, f all places, has been quick t adpt utdr learning.
The district isn’t all ut side all the time, but certain classes, like art, have mved utdrs. Supplies came frm federal (联邦的) funds and lcal dnatins. And while Maine has plenty f pen space, Brke Teller, the utdr learning crdinatr (协调人) fr Prtland Public Schls, believes schls in majr cities culd have green classrms hiding underneath their pavement (路面). When I mentined t sme friends that we all have accents, mst f them prudly replied, “Well, I speak perfect English/Chinese/etc.” But this kind f answer misses the pint.
Mre ften than nt, what we mean when we say smene “has an accent” is that their accent is different frm the lcal ne, r that prnunciatins are different frm ur wn. But this definitin f accents is limiting and culd give rise t prejudice (偏见). Funnily enugh, in terms f the language study, every persn speaks with an accent. It is the regular differences in hw we prduce sunds that define ur accents. Even if yu dn’t hear it yurself, yu speak with sme srt f accent. In this sense, it’s pintless t pint ut that smene “has an accent”. We all d!
Every persn speaks a dialect, t. In the field f language study, a dialect is a versin f a language that is characterized by its variatins f structure, phrases and wrds. Fr instance, “Yu gt eat r nt?” (meaning “Have yu eaten?”) is an acceptable and understd questin in Singapre Oral English. The fact that this expressin wuld cause a standard American English speaker t take pause desn’t mean that Singapre Oral English is “wrng” r “ungrammatical”. The sentence is well-frmed and clearly cmmunicative, accrding t native Singapre English speakers’ slid system f grammar. Why shuld it be wrng just because it’s different?
We need t mve beynd a narrw cnceptin f accents and dialects — fr the benefit f everyne. Language differences like these prvide insights int peple’s cultural experiences and backgrunds. In a glbal age, the way ne speaks is a distinct part f ne’s identity. Mst peple wuld be happy t talk abut the cultures behind their speech. We’d learn mre abut the wrld we live in and make friends alng the way.
32.What des the authr think f his/her friends’ respnse in paragraph 1?
A.It misses the real meaning f accents. B.It reflects their language levels.
C.It misses the pint f cmmunicatin. D.It reflects their self cnfidence.
33.Why des the authr use the example f Singapre Oral English?
    A. T crrect a grammatical mistake. B. T shw the diversity f dialects.
C.T shw the use f dialects is reasnable. D. T bring in a traditinal apprach.
34.What des the authr recmmend us t d in the last paragraph?
    A. Learn t speak with yur lcal dialect.
    B. Seek fr an fficial definitin f accents.
    C. Appreciate the value f accents and dialects.
    D. Tell ur lcal languages frm thers’.
35.What can be a suitable title fr this passage?
A.Accents Represent Our Identities B.Everyne Has an Accent
C.Dialects Lead t Misunderstanding D.Standard English Is at Risk
