Module 2 Unit 6 Bird-watchingReading IZhalong-A special placeAnalysis of teaching materialThis unit is the second unit of Module 2 in Book A, Grade 8. The topic of this module is ‘Nature and the Environment’, which presents the relationship between Man and the nature. The unit 6 ‘birdwatching’ is prepared well by unit 5 in which students have learned some useful expressions close to nature and the environment. The theme of this unit is ‘Birdwatching’ and it is mainly about the introduction of rare birds and Zhalong Nature Reserve. This reading lesson is the second period of the unit, and the reading text is mainly about Zhalong Nature Reserve, a special place for birds. The main teaching content is focused on having a better understanding of Zhalong and the protection for the environment. So the teacher doesn’t spend too much time dealing with the words in class and some activities in the book will be adjusted. In this lesson, the bottom-up reading model will be emphasized.By reading the text, students will have a better understanding of Zhalong and their awareness of protecting wildlife and the environment will be improved. Analysis of studentsThe students have been prepared well by the last lesson and they have known some kinds of birds and are capable of describing birds, while many students are not familiar with Zhalong. They may be interested in what kinds of birds live in Zhalong and what happens to them in this special world. In this way, the teacher will build a solid scaffold for students to get familiar with the topic by presenting some pictures. And the students will be able to express their ideas about the special place The Grade 8 students are expected to master certain reading strategies, such as skimming, scanning, predicting and guessing meaning in the context. So it is necessary for the teacher to design some activities to guide the students to apply and strengthen their reading strategies and to cultivate their critical thinking.
