I was cmfrtable with taking lnger t becme an independent scientist. My adviser had sme prjects he wanted t handle and I chse ne t wrk n, knwing I culd draw n his expertise(专业知识) and gain supprt frm lab mates. Hwever, l investigated 10 different hyptheses(假说)— just t prve each a dead end. Each time the nly chice was t make the next likely hypthesis and start ver in a different directin. The lack f prgress was wearing me dwn.
Then came the speaker’s cmment. I brke dwn and went t my adviser. He pinted ut that ver the past 6 years I had mastered many difficult techniques. My grwing expertise was cmparable with the very best. If I didn’t have the answer t my research questin yet, it was because f the cmplexity f the answer, nt because f persnal shrtcmings(不足之处). This viewpint helped calm me. It helped me push frward with determinatin and perseverance. Under my adviser’s cntinued guidance and supprt, I hit n a hypthesis that wrked ut and I graduated finally.

The number f landline users has plummeted with the rise f cellphnes, and the 19th- century technlgy’s days appear t be numbered. Prviders like AT&T are lking t exit the business by transitining custmers t cellphnes r hme telephne service ver bradband cnnectins. But fr many f the millins f peple still relying n their cpper- based(铜基的) landline telephnes, ther ptins are either unavailable, t expensive, r are unreliable when it matters mst.
The cpper lines used fr traditinal landlines carry electricity ver the wires, s as lng as a phne is charged it will wrk during a pwer utage(停电). Landlines are separate frm cellular(蜂窝状的) and bradband netwrk s and are nt affected by their utages, making them a necessary backstp(备用方案) in rural areas.
AT&T recently annunced its intentin t end landline service t parts f the state. “We spend mre than a billin dllars a year in Califrnia maintaining ur netwrk and services that are used by 5 percent f husehlds tday and this is rapidly declining,” said Susan Jhnsn, AT&T’s head f wireline transfrmatin. “That’s like cling an entire high- rise building in the heat f the summer with peple nly living n ne flr.”
Despite the annuncement, AT&T says it is nt cutting ff cpper landline custmers at this time, and peple can still sign up fr a new landline. Hwever, like ther landline cmpanies, it is hping t transitin thse custmers t ther newer ptins.
28.What d the wrds f Susan Reiter in paragraph 1 mainly shw?

C.They are simple enugh fr rural peple t perate.
D.They are still. available during cellular netwrk utages.
31.What is the main reasn fr AT&T t end its landline service?

Much like their human wners, dgs have a prblem f besity (肥胖). One recent study f British dgs fund that ne in 14 is t fat, putting them at higher risk f cnditins like arthritis, shrtening their lifespan(寿命) and making walks mre f a drag. Certain breeds. like Labradrs, are mre likely t gain weight.
The study, led by Eleanr Raffan, a prfessr at the University f Cambridge, fcused n a gene knwn as POMC, which is fund in humans. as well as dgs. In a previus study, published m 2016. Dr Raffa n and her clleagues fund that bese Labradrs were much mre likely than slimmer dgs t be missing a small sectin f DNA in the gene, a s- called deletin mutatin(缺失突变). In the latest study the researchers set ut t identify hw this mutatin might cause them t gain weight.
Their first finding rested n the results f a “sausage- in-a- bx test” Experimenters recrded the Labs’ reactin t a meat y treat that they culd see and smell, but culdn’t eat. On average, dgs with the POMC mutatin spent almst twice as lng lking at, r— fr whatever reasn— playing with, the bx as thse withut.
In anther experiment the dgs were encuraged t sleep in a labratry, where the amunt f xygen and carbn dixide breathed in and ut was measured. Frm this, the scientists fund that dgs with the POMC mutatin burned 25% fewer calries at rest than thse withut, indicating that the hungry dgs may need t stick t a particularly light diet in rder t stay slim.
Additinally, the authrs identified a prtein affected by the mutatin in the Labs. Scientists investigating the effects f genes typically study mice. but this prtein is nt present in mice. Given the fact that many peple with the rare mutatin becme bese as children, it is likely that this verlked prtein is als relevant t weight cntrl in humans.
Hwever, there are als many healthy, happy Labradrs wh have the POMC mutatin, adds Dr Raffan. “S fr nw, wners lking t keep their pets in shape will. just need t hide the treats and resist thse pleading(恳求的), puppy- dg eyes.”
32.What did the latest study try t find ut?
A.The causes f the POMC mutatin in Labradrs.
B.The effects f the POMC mutatin n dgs’ health.
C.The rle f the POMC mutatin in Labradrs’ besity.
D.The slutin t the besity caused by the POMC mutatin.
33.What can we learn abut the POMC mutatin frm paragraph 3?
A.It increased the dgs’ desire fr fd.B.It made the dgs enjy their fd mre.
C.It changed the dgs dietary preferences.D.It enabled the dgs t eat mre at ne time.
34.What can be inferred abut the study frm the last but ne paragraph?
A.It cnfirms the gene surce f human besity.
B.It may cntribute t human weight management.
C.It can explain why it is nt easy fr humans t keep fit.
D.It denies previus findings n the effects f the POMC mutatin.
35.What shuld pet wners d accrding t Dr Raffan?
A.Prvide a balanced diet.B.Increase their pets’ physical activity.
C.Try t cntrl their pets’ fd intake.D Select dgs withut the mutatin as pets.
