Ehrman Crest Elementary and Middle Schl, near Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, celebrated its pening in August,2022. TIME magazine put the schl n its yearly list f best inventins.
The hnr fcused n Ehrman Crest’s inventive design. There are mathematical designs n the flrs and big magnetic (磁化的) maps n the walls. Sme classrms cnnect t the utdrs. There’s als a garden.
“We didn’t set ut t be a best inventin,” Seneca Valley Schl District superintendent Tracy Vitale said. “We set ut simply t take the place f an 84- year- ld building. That building needed t much wrk t be saved,” Vitale says, “s a decisin was made t start fresh. We said, ‘This is ur chance t build the schl f the future.’ And that’s what we did.”
After adults made decisins abut basics, such as the budget and the number f classrms needed, the architects (建筑师)met with students. Michael Crb is with the architecture cmpany CannnDesign. “We really pushed hard n, ‘What d yu imagine a new schl t be?’ and ‘What kind f envirnment wuld yu lve t learn in?’” he explains. “We wanted students’ pinins n hw the schl shuld lk and feel.”
CannnDesign partnered with the Children’s Museum f Pittsburgh n the prject. Anne Fullenkamp, a directr at the museum, said the design started with“ visining sessins (设想会议)”, where kids culd express their ideas. The kids were given a lt f strange materials fr their designs. “The kids made it clear that the envirnment shuld be fun. The result is a schl with all the excitement f a children’s museum. There are traditinal classrms, but there are als places fr explratin and cperatin. Every space in this building is fr learning,” Crb says.
Ehrman Crest hpes that the physical space will have a psitive influence n student achievement. “We built ur dream schl,” Vitale says. “I think the lessns learned here are ‘Be creative as adults’ and ‘Listen t children’. ”
