A simple gesture (手势) can be frmed int a child's memry s quickly that it will cause the child t give a false answer t a questin accmpanied by that gesture. A new finding suggests that parents, scial wrkers, psychlgists and lawyers shuld be careful with their hands as well as their wrds.
Gestures can be as infrmative as speech, but hand gestures are s cmmn that we rarely ntice we're using them.
“While memries f bth adults and children are easy t react t suggestins, thse f children are knwn t be particularly influenced." said lead researcher Sara Braders f Nrthwestern University, “Kids are used t lking t adults t tell events fr them and can be misled even if nt intentinally.”
Previus research, fr example, has shwn that detail-laded questins ften cause false answers; when asked, say “Did yu drink juice at the picnic?”, the child is likely t say "yes" even if n juice had been available. It is nt that the child is cnsciusly lying, but rather the detail is quickly frmed int his r her memry. T avid this prblem, scial wrkers have lng been advised t ask children nly pen-ended questins, such as “What did yu haye at the picnic?”. But an pen-ended questin paired with a gesture, briefly meaning a juice bx, is treated like a detailed questin. That is, children becme likely t answer falsely.
And it isn’t just a few kids: 77% f children gave at least ne piece f false infrmatin when a detail was suggested by an rdinary gesture. Gestures may als becme mre ppular when talking with nn-fluent language users, such as little kids. Braders said, “As hand mvements can impart meaning f unfamiliar wrds and phrases, it certainly seems reasnable that adults wuld gesture mre with children.”In general, Braders advises parents and ther adults t try t be aware f yur hands when questining a child abut an event.Otherwise, yu might be getting answers that dn't reflect what actually happened.

D.They are ften used by scial wrkers.

A. Children are easy t tell lies.
B. Their memries are affected easily.
C. These gestures are very attractive.
D. These gestures are used frequently.
30. What des the underlined wrd “impart” in Paragraph 6 mean?
A. Pass n. B. Tell apart C. Appeal tD. Break dwn

Histrians are ften asked t examine the actins f ur ancestrs s we can repeat their wisdm and avid their mistakes. But the present is just t different frm the past. It is a waste f time t study Hannibal's strategies in the Secnd Punic War(第二次布匿战争)s as t cpy them in the Third Wrld War. What wrked well in cavalry battles (骑兵战) will nt necessarily be beneficial in cyber war(网络战).Studying histry aims t lsen (松开) the hld f the past.
A yung cuple building a new hme may ask the architect fr a nice lawn (草坪)in the frnt yard. Why a lawn? "Because lawns are beautiful, " the cuple might explain. But why d they think s?
The idea f grwing a lawn at the entrance t private huses and public buildings was brn in the castles f French and English aristcrats in the late Middle Ages. Well-kept lawns demanded land and a lt f wrk. In exchange, they prduced nthing f value. The neat grass at the entrance t castles was a scial psitin symbl nbdy culd pretend t have. Later the new parliaments (议会), supreme curts, presidential residences increasingly shwed their pwer in rw upn rw f neat green grass. Humans came t identify lawns with plitical pwer, scial psitin and ecnmic wealth.
When yu nw cme t plan yur dream huse, yu might think twice abut having a lawn in the frnt yard. Yu are f curse still free t d it. But yu are als free t shake ff the cultural carg given t yu by the upper class. This is the best reasn t learn histry: nt in rder t guess the future, but t free yurself f the past and imagine different lives. Of curse this is nt ttal freedm — we cannt avid being shaped by the past. But sme freedm is better than nne.

A. Cultural mistakes. B. Cultural standards.
C. Histrical buildings. D. Histrical knwledge.
